Hi
Can I just bought an HP Media Center and when I hook a microphone in either front or back panel, Cool Edit only records the left side of my voice not both.
Anyone know how I could get it to record both right and left?
It records the speakers just fine

perhaps you have you mono microphone plugged into a stereo line in port instead of the dedicated microphone port'

Well the microphone I have used to record both sides with my other computer, but now that I got a new computer, it records only the left side. Any other suggestions on what it might be?

Try plugging it in all the way.

It could be that your "other computer" was set up to put the left input (which is apparently your microphone's only working input) into both channels. This could have been either hardware or software related, or both. Your "new computer" may not have the capability to do this,or may not be set up to do this.
Check the settings on your new computer to see if you can put the left input into both channels. Otherwise, buy another microphone. (Make sure it's a stereo one.) -
I'm serious... plugging in a 3.5mm stereo jack into the back of the computer is not all that easy. If only one channel plays, it either means:
1) The plug isn't all the way in,
2) The mike is defective, or
3) The sound card is defective.
CoolEdit works just fine when both inputs are PRESENT!ICBM target coordinates:

This may seem a silly question, but are you using a stereo mic? Mic jack sockets can be used in two different ways. They can either be connected for a stereo mic where the tip connection is left channel, ring connection is right channel and the sleeve is ground. Alternatively, they can be connected so that the tip is mono audio, the ring is power feed for an electret condensor type mic and the sleeve is ground. The latter type will work with either an electret or standard, non powered mic.
Look at the plug on your mic and see if it has a ring or not (compare it with a standard line-in one to check the difference). If it doesn't, it is a mono mic and you are trying to use it on a computer expecting to see a stereo one. A stereo mic is pretty obvious, it is actually two mics, one facing one way and the other facing the other. -
It records on both speakers with Sound Recorder, so that can't mean that my microphone is mono can it? And it does have a ring.
The mic I'm using is a Sony ECM-Z200.
Also it is plugged all the way in.
Having said that, it must be Cool Edit that needs to be configured someway. I have everything selected in the Volume Controls and everything is balanced. I just can't get it to record in the right speaker using Cool Edit.
Please help.
Thanks for all of the above. -
If it records both channels with Windows Sound Recorder, then the microphone should be OK.
I don't own Cool Edit or Adobe Audition, so I am not familiar with the setup, but that is probably more than likely the problem.
Just so we all know for sure, does it record both channels *now* on the *new computer* with Sound Recorder, or is this *old behavior* on your *old computer*?
Maybe you just need to uninstall and reinstall Cool Edit, and pay close attention to setup instructions, if any, during installation. -
Yes I reinstalled and installed Cool Edit again, but it has the same problem. On Sound Recorder it records on both speakers whereas Cool Edit doesn't, not like it used to on the old computer.
I did click New in Cool Edit and selected the Stereo selection.
Also with Windows Recording Mixer, I selected Stereo Mix. Microphone cannot be selected to record (well it can be selected, but when it is selected, nothing is recorded) -
This is elementary, but I forget to do it all the time. Go to START -> All Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Volume Control which will display the Play Control Dialog Box. Click Options->Properties and then click on the 'Recording' check box when the new dialog pops up. I only have one device in the Mixer device select box, but you may have more to select from. Make sure that the Microphone is checked in the scroll box and then click OK. The Record Control Dialog box will reappear. Make sure that the microphone is Selected in its check box and the volume and balance are set. You might also want to deselect the other devices. On the microphone advanced tab, you might also want to check the +20 dB boost. Mine is set that way.

Ok so I got a stereo microphone, I did go to Go to START -> All Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Volume Control which will display the Play Control Dialog Box.
And I even tried adjusting and testing within Cool Edit, but for some reason it still records in one channel.
When I record in Sound Recorder you can hear the sound in both speakers. So it has to do something with Cool Edit and not my graphics card and not the ports or the fact I didn't push the plug in all the way because I did many times.
Can anyone help me find what else might be the issue??
