I am curious if anyone has been able to create a DVD on a CD-R and have it play in a DVD player. I have been able to get the CD-R to play with WINDVD on a computer but would like to get my DVD player to play it. The DVD player is CD-R compatable. I have been able to get VCD's burned to work with this unit. I know I am close for it see track 1 now but I still can not make it play the movie. I am assuming there is still something wrong with format. I have created it via MyDVD.

dreuter,
I have been intensely pursuing this myself. I have burned a VCD of music videos onto a CD-R disc with an HP burner and find that I can read it on my old Sony DVD 300 player but it won't play on my new 300 disks Sony 860. When I burned the same videos on another computer with a LiteOn burner I couldn't read the disks in either the Sony 300 or the Sony 860. I looked in the DVD compatibility list and found that the 860 supported CD_RW but not CD-R disks. I burned a new VCD on a CD-RW disk of these same videos using EasyCD Creator 5 Platinum and an HP burner. It plays in the Sony 860 but now does not play in the 300. The CD-RW VCD does kind of skip in the Sony 860 at times. I am looking for some Verbatim CD-RW disks to try again.
Seems there are issues of Media type(CD-R/CD-RW), Media quality(Verbatim/Maxell), DVD compatibility(Model 300/860), and CDR/W disk burner(HP/LiteOn).

What you are trying to create is a "miniDVD" or sometimes called a "cDVD". Because of firmware issues involved with DVD players & the fact that miniDVD is not true video format that is supported, they are only about 2% of players on the market that actually will play this format. One being the GE 1101P & 5803 (you have to adjust firmware though) that can be found at Wal-Mart. you can do a search through these forums under "miniDVD" for to find out more about it & opinions of it as well.

Thank you. Makes sense.
Do you think the problems would go away if I get a DVD-R burner and DVD-R's. I have been just trying to make sure that my capture system and encoders and so forth all were worth while before I venture further with more money into trying to get my old 8mm stuff into a DVD format before my 8mm unit quits. I have had to repair it twice and looking back could have bought a new one. now days it is getting to be out of style and harder to find.
Thanks for the advice.

My first post in this forum. I apologize if this post is somewhat off topic. I'm going to be getting the Sony 860 and I noticed some people have had luck with cd-r's. Have you found any yet? Also, have you tried burning mpeg's on dvd-r and playing on this unit? I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Well... if u want to burn a dvd format on a regualr cd-r, thats impossible. (otherwise correct me) Because the laser pickups for regular cd's and dvd's are different. For example.... CD-r(w)s have the data on the cd more spread out, and with a dvd the data is more compressed. (look at the table below) So if u try to play a dvd in a cd player, or a regular cd-rom the drive laser doesnt have the capacity to read the data so compressed into eachother. So the only choice is to burn a cd with a dvd-r(w) drive, with the specified dvd cd's. So therefore, u cannot burn a dvd with a dvd-r onto a cd-r because of the data compression.
But u can encode/re-encode the file to as close as dvd specs as possible, such as maybe an XSVCD or SVCD. Or a modified version of those. But this would be a standard or non-standard dvd.
If i mis-understood your question and it made no since what so ever disguard my answer.
Key: (_._._.) - CD-r(w) data example on cd
The dots are info and the dashes are spaces in between the info
(|.|.|.) - DVD-r(w) data example on cd
The dots are the info and the lines are the spaces.
So overall the distance between the info on cd-r(w) and the dvd-r(w) are drastically different. Which means that the DVD hold a higher capacity than regular cd's -
"Well... if u want to burn a dvd format on a regualr cd-r, thats impossible."
Wrong, as I previously stated, you CAN burn a CDR/W in DVD FORMAT. The format is simply called the UDF/ISO 9660 bridge mode. You can burn ANY type of media in this format. They key is, yes, somewhat of what you are saying. The firmware inside a DVD player does not allow for the unit to interpret a CDR/W as containing DVD format material. DVD players' firmware have been program this way because "miniDVD" is not an offical supported format. The industry did not see the point of supporting a rarely used format, especially with DVDRs becoming ever so popular. Thus is why a firmware hack like for my player is needed which allows me to set my player if I choose to read CDR/Ws as DVD media.
