Was working fine, now nothing but coasters

I have been burning DVDs about 2 weeks now. I have a problem(s) with my Rosewill RD-162 DVD burner.
Here is my backup process:
1. smartripper
2. vobblanker
3. dvdshrink
4. nero express

I have a DVD player I rip from and for some reason two stealth drives listed, I think one of them is because I use daemon tools to verify an .ISO file I create with dvdshrink. After making this file, I test with daemon to be sure the DVD is compliant, then I use Nero to COPY DISK from the daemon drive. I am using Maxell DVD +R for my standalone and +RW for testing as well. This has worked fine till now.

The problem now is that almost every burn I do results in either an “unspecified target error” or a successful burn which will not play on my standalone (says NO PLAY) and when I then try to look at it on the DVD player on my PC, it says no disk in the drive.

If I get the “unspecified target error” Nero will show the disk as empty, but will no longer do anything with them, they go to the coaster pile. The “no plays” are going there as well.

I have tried outputting from dvdshrink as a file, as an .ISO, and directly to Nero. None seem to work now. I have removed and reinstalled Nero, I have removed all CD/DVD/stealth drives and rebooted to find them all reinstalled.

Also, my drives have now become out of order, I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. They were in the following order:
1. E – DVD burner
2. F – DVD player
3. G – stealth drive (Nero?)
4. H – daemon mounted drive

Now they are:
1. E - DVD player
2. F - DVD burner
3. G – stealth drive
4. H – daemon mounted drive

I've also made about 5 RW coasters that Nero won't read after it finishes writing them. Then it will never recognise them again, but I tried again with a +RW which worked and plays on my PC, so I tried another +R and failed with the following log if it makes sense to anyone here:

Why not just use DVD DECRYPTER to rip then use DVD SHRINK to ISO IMAGE and then burn with DECRYPTER? Seems a easier process then what you have posted unless you're creating your own DVD's with video footage from a digital camcorder or something.

First, cause I dont have it, second cause I dont know if it blanks VOB files, third, I said I AM using DVD SHRINK to create ISO files. I did not mention, however, that it has started creating .MDS or .MDO files in stead if the .ISO files I told it to make. These will NOT write on my system and could be part of the problem, but I cannot make it write .ISO files any more.[/i]

Madwand...you cant make a 4gb+ sized .iso file on a drive that's fat32, it must be NTSC.. Is your drive setup for NTSC?

The .MDS files are the ISO images that you burn.

You maybe need to remember Madwand1 that people were willing to try and help you and were doing so for free.

Many will have different versions as to why things may have gone wrong with your PC's burner. My own experience would have led me to make a completely different suggestion that SP2 may be at fault. Probably another 'useless' answer to you, but in another instance it would have been helpful.

Personally, if I post a question and someone is nice enough to take the time to respond and attempt to help, I am very grateful, whether it actually solves the issue or not.

Did you look at your log? A minute twenty-two into the burn, there was a medium error. How many discs did you burn with that drive and how many in a row? I've seen this message on drives that were dead. These aren't industrial burners, lasers have a limited lifetime i.e. they need a cool down period between burns.

That's the answer I was looking for. That's why I submitted the log, I don't have any idea what that stuff meant. I was hoping someone else did. But I only burned about 15 disks with it in the week I had it when I printed that error msg. Your answer would have told me that the drive was defective. Thanks.

I'm not so sure that dvd 'backing up' is an 'exact science' which is why you got replies that didn't satisfy you. They were made by people willing to make suggestions to you that may have helped you.

I'm curious about your backup method - why do you need to use vobblanker? Why do you even need to use DVDripper. I usually just DVDshrink straight from original DVD to HD.

I take exception to certain answers given where no thought has been given to the question, such as the reference to 4G file limits. Why would someone give that as a solution to disk errors, especially when it was in no way referenced in the question? I have never seen a 4G video file in years of ripping DVDs. Another would be the questioning of my methods, when the method I have described is almost verbatim from one of the guides on this site, with the exception being that I use smartripper first, as a carryover from my SVCD days. Answers like that merely detract from the original question and any possible valid answers. I have no problem with people trying to help, but if you don't know the answer, I'd rather wait to hear from someone who does.

I use SMARTripper to rip it. I could rip using vobblanker, I guess, but I don't trust it. I use vobblanker to remove wasteful huge amounts of unwanted data to eliminate the need for unnecessary compression. dvdshrink does not allow this, but it does allow for the elimination of massive amounts of unwanted sound files. The three together give me the most efficient use of space.
