  1. Hello,

A friend of mine was recently backing up some files off of his computer to cds. He burned a bunch of files, including a .doc file that he had on the desktop. After burning he went back and looked on the desktop, only to discover the file was missing. He checked the recycle bin and searched the drive but the file was no where to be found. I suggested using a couple apps to scan his hd to try and recover the file, but it wasn't on there either, indicating it probably wasn't deleted. Does anyone have any ideas on what this strange problem may be and how to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Garibaldi

I know that some have the "delete image after burning" option, but it usually doesn't extend to individual files or folders.

  4. Here's what he said:
I've been using EZ CD Creator to burn CDs, WinZip to compress files,
Music Match Jukebox for converting WAVs to MP3s, and Netscape, Yahoo
    Messenger, and Trillian for communications.
Even if it was deleted it should have been recoverable with one of those apps I told him about, since those scan the hd for recoverable files.

    Ideas?

    They were never there.

These aren't the files you are looking for.

He can go on about his business.

Yes I appreciate the star wars reference. It just seems so strange that it would disappear like this.

Does he have any type of DOD-type erasing program? If he accidentally used that on the doc, they are pretty resistant against recovery.

Strange enough, but he still has the copy on disc, right?

Another very siple thing (that has happened to me) is renaming. Most programs use an Explorer-like interface which allows all Explorer functions. I remember clicking on a file, then trying to open it later (using "recent files") and it coudln't find the file. I looked for unique words within the file and found it under a strange name. He could go that route and see if anything turns up. Or by date or size or whatever other relevant criteria he can come up with.

Its not on the disk, I'm not sure if he forgot to add it or what but it's not there. At any rate I'll have him check to see if he can find it under another name.
    Thanks.
