  1. A friend of mine filmed a fight that I would like to watch. He brought it around on disc and copied onto my computer. I can watch the fight on my computer but I would like to put it on a disc and watch it in my player. Can it be done by using Toast 6.1? Or do I need to convert 'XviD' to some other format using another application? Please let me know. Cheers in advance

Pleas read the following threads, a search for
.avi, xvid, 3ivx, and divx ( xvid backwards)
    would have yeilded these results;

  3. I did do a search first and I did find those links. I read them but found them hard to understand as I am a complete novice ie the 3rd one refers to using sizzle but says the latest version 0.5 makes the video choppy. I just need the easiest way to watch this in my dvd player. I was hoping someone would say how to convert it to mpeg so maybe I could save it onto a cd and watch it that way? I just need the best possible way without loosing any quality. Can I do it with the applications I have?

    I have:

    Quicktime Pro 7
    Divx Doctor II
    Cleaner 6
    Toast 6

    YES, you are almost there.
go download the 3ivx component for QT
    over at www.3ivx.com.

Once you do that, and install it, then do this:
Run the xvid through DiVX Doctor II.
it will create a QT .mov file, verify it plays through QT 7.
if so, then drag and drop it onto the VIDEO tab in
Toast 6, and it will do the rest.

  5. cheers 'terryj' for getting back to me and explaining how to do it in easy to understand terms. I'll give it a go when I'm not so tired tomorrow. Once again thanks for your help

  6. Just tried the toast bit and it does something for about 4 hours and then toast unexpectadly quits. I've tried it twice now and ech time it's the same. Is there any other way in trying to create the relevant files to go in a VIDEO_TS folder. I don't mind purchasing other software so long as the process is easy.

Can you confirm that the source file is playable in Qt?

I can't believe we don't have a sticky for this stuff, I feel like we get a "how do I get mpeg4/divx to play on my DVD player" question every week around here...

  8. Overnight I tried it again in toast and the same thing "toast has unexpectadly crashed".

Yeah, it does play in QT. I did exactly what 'terryj' said – run the xvid through DiVX Doctor II and it plays fine in QT7.

Toast has a problem encoding the audio with QuickTime 7 installed. The Roxio Toast board is going nuts over this. Here's my fix. Everyone expects an update any time now.

    Nice fix Frankie!
Kroc, since A.pack is part of DVD Studio Pro 3
and a $400 plus application, the simpler thing
for you would be to follow Frankie's steps, up
    to number 3,
but then instead of using A.Pack in #4, download and use
ffmpegx to create the audio file in (.ac3) format.

to do so here are your steps, replacing #4:

    1. Open your audio in QT 7 Pro.
    2. Export the file as a .WAV file.
    3. Launch ffmpeg X
    4. drag and drop the audio .WAV file onto the
left side of the summary window.
    5. on the right side, select the pull down menu,
and choose the "audio to ac3" setting.
    6. click the audio tab, make sure the audio is set
    for the following:

    480000 khz
    192 kbps rate
    5.1

    then encode the file.
    7. once it's done, then pick up where we left off
    on Frankie's steps ( #5).

    Everything should work fine now.

  11. cheers for the help I'll give that a go tonight. The only thing I'm not sure about is step 1. and how to seperate the video from the audio in quicktime. I presume I need to export them seperately but as what?

    PS

Will the quality be as good?

    Ok,
    add this as Step #0.

    0. Open the QT .mov file you got from taking the .avi
file and processing it through DIVX Doctor II.
With the file open in QT Pro, do the following:

Export as: Quicktime to .WAV ( which will save your audio).
then back to your QT .mov file, and export it out as
Quicktime to QT Movie, but under "options" uncheck the
Audio Checkbox, so that you get video only.
Export as a video only QT movie.

Ok, now I just went and voided the first two steps
    of my #4 step.

so then you would pick up at my #4--3. step
and continue from there, as you now have
gotten the audio to WAV earlier than necessary.

    terryj, you rock!

kroc, another way to separate the video from audio with QuickTime is to deselect the Sound Track in Window/Show Movie Properties and then choose File/Save As, Save As A Reference File. This will save a small QuickTime file that will point to the larger file's Video Track only. Use this file to encode with Toast. (Man, I love QuickTime.) terryj, please clarify if needed... 8)

  15. Cheers for the advice. 'frankiec' – does that save time cause I've just started exporting the movie without sound and it's taking ages.

Oh, yes, stop now. It's the difference between a ~1 MB pointer file and a 600+ MB file.

Hopefully Roxio fixes this audio problem fast, we're all interested!

  19. I've just mad the .wav file and I've made the QT ref. file as explained above. I select DVD-Video in Toast and drop the QT ref. file onto the window. It doesn't ask for the audio and it quits after 5 seconds and says "Could not record the disc because of a Mac OS Error. Result Code = -2009

Am I doing the last bit of the process wrong?

  20. ps while I'm waiting for a reply I think I found abnother way to seperate the video. If I just select the "video track" in the "properties" window and then click extract – I wander if this will work?

With the above route (with the extracted file) I don't get an error message. It has started encoding within toast. I=t hasn't asked for the audio file though – does it ask for it after the encoding? Please let me know asap 'cause I want to try and let this run overnight because it's about an hour long. Once again, thanks in advance

It won't ask for the audio yet. After Toast finishes encoding, take the finished M2V file from the Roxio Converted Items folder* and place it aside. Now time to make encode the audio to AC3. When finished with the audio, add the M2V file to Toast, it will then ask for the audio file, and you can select the AC3 then.

    * You made sure that you changed the Toast preference Delete Converted Items to Never, right?

P.S. ffmpegX can read the audio directly from the AVI, so you won't have to extract the audio to WAV/AIFF. ffmpegX's Movie audio to AC3 preset defaults to 5:1, so change the Channels to Stereo in the Audio tab.

One good point about this way is that you can control how big the audio is depending on how big the finished M2V is. If your M2V file is 2.5 GB then you can encode the AC3 at 448 kbit/s bitrate. If your M2V file is 4 GB then encode the AC3 at 192 kbit/s. If the total size is a little too big I use Popcorn to fit it. You see what I mean... :P

If you do that it'll still make a large QuickTime file instead of a smaller, "pointer" QuickTime file.

  24. OK, I thought it asked for it before it started encoding. And I'm glad you mentioned where it puts the converted items folder. I'll give this a go and I hope it works. Now I hope people will understand why I started another thread. I've edited everything that was said above into an easy to understand format for future reference. If it works I can post it here if anyones interested?

It didn't work with just the pointer file so I had to do it this way.

I don't remember doing that What's the default selection? and will it really delete it straight away? I can't check at the moment 'cause it's encoding.

The default setting will delete the file when Toast quits. It's okay though, when Toast is done encoding do not quit the program -- remove the M2V file from the folder then quit Toast.
