First, you need to work out if these are downloaded MPEG movies or uploaded mpeg movies from your digital video camera

Then you need to know the VCD / SVCD / DVD specs (available in the What is section - top left). Then you need to check your files with GSpot or AVICodec to see if any of your files match the specs - if so, you can leave them as-is. If not, then you need to convert them so that they are VCD / SVCD / DVD compliant.

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm might help you out if you need to convert your files. Also, the Guides section (to your left) and selecting the type of conversion you need to do in the dropdown box might also give you some leads. Alternatively, go to the Tools section (to your left) and choose the category of the conversion you need to do. This will list possible tools that might help you, and when you select a tool, take note that there is also a listing of guides that use that tool, which also might come in handy.

Using CD-R or DVDR discs is a user choice - firstly you need to have a burner that is capable of writing to the medium you choose. Then you need to consider that DVDR capacity is roughly 6 times that of CD-Rs.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. One way is to use TMPGEnc DVD Author. It can take both raw MPEGs or DVD files. (To play on a standalone MPEGs must be "authored", or put into the proper structure). If TDA offers to convert non-compliant audio sampling rate, click okay. Guides for TDA over there <--.

Another useful tool is VSO DivXtoDVD (free). It can convert a variety of file types, including MPEGs, and author them to DVD. This is rather bare-bones but probably the easiest way for you. That is, I assume from your question that you're new at this. Good luck and read some guides.

DVD-R has a slight edge in compatibility.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
