Went to Hauppauge at NAB to view their new technology demos.

I asked what their plans were to fix problems with the PVR-150. The "expert" in the booth denied that there was a problem.

Makes me highly suspicious of Hauppauge. I'll believe only credible third parties.

I have tested those drivers some time ago.
I will quote here my post from the SHSPVR forum
You will find more findings of other people there including screenshots.
    http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=8023.0

I installed the new PreRelease 2.0.30.23123 drivers on my system here..
I removed all register tweaks and used the AV-line/S-Video with a S-VHS VCR as tuner.

A few seconds after starting the WinTV application I already noticed enormous distortions in the sound...
I really can't believe all this.., It never sounded THAT bad..
Almost all channels now have audio distortion.

This is a small recording from the DUTCH TMF MUSIC channel from cable.
You can find the WAV file here:

Actually, no, you haven't. The pre-released version you review comes in a zipfile with a 524,706 byte filesize. The zipfile I link to has a 524,749 filesize. Obviously, the pre-release version has been "tinkered" with before the version I mention was made public.
    So WHY you think that?

I just compared the contents of my old ZIP archive and the new one from the Hauppauge site. ( I did that before already ofcourse)
    They are exactly the same!

Those hauppage guys have simply NO clue what they are doing.
Even funnier is the fact that all OLDER audio tweaks don't work anymore. :P

The Hauppauge website claims to have an update for the PVR-150 that solves the audio overmodulation anomaly some people have. Well, I tried it and it made the audio problem much much worse. And, to get rid of this upgrade, I had to uninstall the whole thing back to the wall ... and reinstall from my original Hauppauge CD. That brought things back to where they were before.

But ... still on a search for a utility that would "tweek" the audio settings, I came across this utility:

    http://www.cask-of-amontillado.com/tweaker/Hauppauge_tweaker.zip

I downloaded it, installed it, ran it ... and it didn't seem to work either. I even set the volume levels all the way down, rebooted, and no change:

Then, based on a suggestion, I made one more modification ... unchecking the Automatic Gain Control box and rebooting again:

It didn't work either (sigh). In any case, I'm back to square one -- using a few manual volume settings via Windows to try to minimize the problem. But the tweaks I've found don't appear to do squat.

I think you need to have a later version of Hauppauge's software for those tweeks to work. The tweaker saves those settings in the registry and earlier versions of the software don't read them.

Hmm ... problem is, which later version should I use to be copasetic with the tweaker ... yet not install those new drivers that made things worse?

Maybe you've seen it already -- this thread at shspvr.com might help:

If nothing else, maybe you can contact amontillado via the links there.

    Yes correct.
The audio tweaks only work from driver version 2.0.28.23053 (02/22/05) and up.
(* Wolfson overrideable through registry. *)

But again in the last drivers they did some really weird things with the sound again. (clipping and distortion)
And the discovered tweaks don't work correctly or not at all anymore. :P

    Well done Hauppauge!

At the moment I am using some older drivers (2.0.30.23070) drivers with a S-Video connection.

OK. I used a fix that is a close approximation of the suggestion found here:

    http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=7317.msg40495#msg40495

The only difference is that I decreased the audio levels a little bit more than he did. Now, the levels are just a teensy bit lower (yes, lower) than my cable channels. But, I like it that way. Not only did the audio fix work, my video improved after I tweaked settings a bit.

Anyhoo, I zipped up the whole method I used into a single file and put it on my domain at:

    http://novelhost.net/FixFiles.zip

in case I need it again.

    Thanks to everyone who helped.

Hehe. You know, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to hear that Hauppauge had downloaded the tweaker utility to see how it worked ... so they can release it themselves a few months from now and order the tweaker's creator to "cease and desist" in providing a "proprietary" utility without permission.

    All's well that ends well.
