Can anyone tell me off a unit that they are pleased with that allows us to edit the info in the list of programs on the HDD so that we can see whats there without opening each one?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but the Pioneer DVR-520H has a "navigator" window which shows thumbnails of the different titles that are on the HDD. When you select one of the functions and highlight a thumnail, the thumbnail starts playing in the thumbnail view with sound so you can preview it without actually selecting it.

The program name may be the title of a TV show if it is transmitted over cable to the Pioneer, or it is the channel number (or line input number). Any of this text can be edited.

The Panasonic E80 allows you to enter the titles and plays whichever clip you are on in the background when you are scrolling through the direct navigator playlist.
