I am planning to buy a new internal DVD burner for my computer. I need to know what are all the features I have to look for while buying the DVD player and what are all the options availiable. Which brand would be a better one. Kindly help me in this regard.

    Thanks

I am currently using a Sony External burner but the specs would be the same for an internal. Here is what you might want to look for:

    1) Multi-format burning (DVD+ and - R/RW)
    2) Dual layered compatable. Currently only the + format is available in dual layer but the - format is coming shortly. This disk holds twice as much data as the current 4.7 GB single layer disks.
    3) Online support! Very important because you can often get firmware updates that greatly improve the burner you purchase. That is why I tend towards brands like Sony.
    4) Bundled software. You can get some very nice packages with your drive. I got the latest version of Nero which sells for about $100 when I purchased my last burner for $200. So the burner actually only cost me $100!

    I hope this helps

    Hello Holmes

Thanks for your information. Even I was thinking of sony in my mind and I have chosen a model from circuitcity.com. Have a look at this model and kindly let me have your feedback.

    Hello Holmes
I have one more question regarding the writing speed of the burner like how long it takes to burn a video dvd which runs for about 3hrs.

And in your early reply you have said about the +format , can you pl. explain me more in detail what is +format and -format.

    Thanks

This is the internal version of the drive I have. They are identical except for the fact that one is internal and one external. I have been very pleased with the drive and I am sure you will be equally happy with yours. I have installed Sony Internal drives on various PCs in my house and for friends and they are very easy upgrades. Good luck with yours!

NEC,Plextor and Pionner are the best DVD writers around.NEC is one of the top sellers at newegg.com $48/free shipping
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152035
and one more thing. The software that comes with any dvd burner are worthless, and it will not alow you to packup and dvd movie.you ganna need
DVD shrink ,and DVD Decrypter and both are free, and Nero for music cd's

I have 3 Benqs in my computers, and have had no problem. For DVD+Rs, you can also do a hardware set of the DVD-ROM setting. This allows DVD+Rs to be read by as many DVD players as possible. Some DVD writers do not allow this setting, or you have install hacked firmware.

I would also suggest you read the following topic in the DVD Writers forum. This discussion covered most points for many different DVD Writers.

  8. You got all the suggestions above the name they mentioned are the most popular on this site. If you buy the NEC you have to go with the hacked FW otherwise it would be reading too slow hacked FW does not make it too loud as I thought my computer fan is louder. I bought the NEC it is cheap. I would say you buy the Pioneer (best model) . People who have Benq say it is good and can book do setting by default. NEC is manufactured to be used with hacked FW there must be a good reason behind it. NEC is OEM meaning you get a drive only! Final suggestion Get the Pioneer it reads RAM too which you never use!! 8)

I second normcar's Benq suggestion. I've got the Benq1620 works great. I currently use only Fuji and verbatim media (TY & MCC codes).

I agree with Denver Dawgs & normcar's suggestion to get the BENQ 1620 drive. Bitsetting for DVD+R media out of the box, no hacked firmware is needed for that. I've got 2 BENQ 1620 drives and they work great for both DVD-R & DVD+R.
