  1. When I try to burn a DVD that I have authored, or downloaded as .vob, etc. DVD files... just about every time the burning program (either Nero, or Sony DVD Architect,) buffers the files, then starts to burn the Lead-in, and after a few minutes, the progress bar jumps to 100% and the DVDr ejects and I get this error:

    'SFMMCX'-(17)
    'nvatabus'-(0)
    -'SONY DVD RW DRU-710A BYX4'-(0)
    Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1795
    A medium error occurred.
A write error occurred. Make sure your media is approved for this drive.

I say "just about every time" because I have successfully burned DVDs on occaision. I can usually burn one every few tries or so, if I have rebooted between. This is annoying because I am wasting DVDr's, gambling on whether it will work or not. I don't think it is a medium error as it suggests, because the same DVDr's work half the time, and I have no problems burning them for data storage. I also don't have any trouble burning anything else. Although, I have recently noticed the drive acting weird, not recognizing CDs, or freezing when I try to access something on a CD or DVD, even playing CDs will freeze my media programs. Everything works fine in my Lite-On DVD/CD drive, but it isn't a burner.

I am using Nero or DVD Architect 3.0 to burn, and DVD Architect 3.0 to author. I also use Memorex 8x 4.7GB DVD-R's.

If you have any clue as to what is wrong, or how to fix it, please help. Also, please no "Buy a new burner" posts. Those don't help anyone.

    Thanks...

  2. So I understand you correctly- are these already authored dvds that are in a folder on your HD? Or is it you are authoring and writing to disc at the same time?
If authored to a HD folder you can test run them thru s/w dvd player on computer. Then just load this folder into burn app. for writing to disc. When finished and successful disc is ensured, delete folder to gain back the needed HD space. This is where 2 separate HDs can be seen as a huge bonus for vid work. Right now it appears that your single 80 gig drive is being taxed to the point of errors.

  3. they are both DVD I have authored, and prepared for burning with DVD Architect, and ones I have downloaded, then tried to burn. Like I said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Also, ones that didn't work, will work later on, without changing anything.

I use DVD Architect 2 all the time with a DRU-710A and have never had a problem.

Actually the DRU-710A has worked well with all my software and media except some Frys GQ brand media.

The problem may be DVDR media or something upstream in the process from Architect 2.

I was going to ask if DVDA2 worked for you.

If you are having the same issues with Nero ... Then maybe it's your media or you may have a broken drive.

Did the SONY test iso from their support site work?

My DRU-710A has worked in 2 different machines with no problems.
