What is ASPI layer?

I saw this in one of the DVD rip guides.

5) If you are having problems copying the Movie VOB files to your HDD, I suggest you check your ASPI Layer, the ASPI that comes with Windows9x, Millenium are not good for ripping, update them, and Windows2000/XP does not come with an ASPI Layer at all!

I haven' had any problems coppying the VOB files but I am using XP and I have noticed this no ASPI Layer error come up. So, what is this? Do I need it? And if so where do I get it?

I have windows xp and got it from Sefy, who emailed it to me the other day. I can email it to you if you like? Or Sefy or Pinoy (moderators) can maybe send it to you if you wish?

You can get Divx codec there, too. You will need this because most movies you download online are Divx files.

Now, the ASPI Layer is the communication language between your Operating System and the CDRW/DVD devices in your system.

Although you may not have it, Windows will try to emulate it using translated commands, this usually suffers slower times in ripping mostly, it is ALWAYS prefered to have it installed as many programs require it to access your drives.

Just a quote from the Adaptec site to clear up the confusion over the ASPI layer issue. It drove me nuts under Win98 for one of my CD burners. No longer a problem with XP.

Unfortunatly the ASPI Layer included with Me, 2000 and XP is so misreable (like everything else Microsoft does) that no other program (except Adaptec and those that provide their own like Nero and BlindWrite) can work with it, and oh, almost forgot, i've installed the "older" ASPI Layer on several ME, 2K and XP and no side effects so far, except that the programs can now work properly

And I like those side effects
