I saw this in one of the DVD rip guides.
5) If you are having problems copying the Movie VOB files to your HDD, I suggest you check your ASPI Layer, the ASPI that comes with Windows9x, Millenium are not good for ripping, update them, and Windows2000/XP does not come with an ASPI Layer at all!
I haven' had any problems coppying the VOB files but I am using XP and I have noticed this no ASPI Layer error come up. So, what is this? Do I need it? And if so where do I get it?

I have windows xp and got it from Sefy, who emailed it to me the other day. I can email it to you if you like? Or Sefy or Pinoy (moderators) can maybe send it to you if you wish?

Here is where I got my ASPI layer:
http://www.doom9.net
You can get Divx codec there, too. You will need this because most movies you download online are Divx files.
Tracey
P.S. Sorry, it was Master Pinoy that helped me on that one, not Sefy! Please forgive me, Pinoy!

No problem me and Sefy are great friends and a pupil shall make mistakes at one point

hehe, dont worry about it, as long as you were helped and have learned, that's what both me and Pinoy are here for
Now, the ASPI Layer is the communication language between your Operating System and the CDRW/DVD devices in your system.
Although you may not have it, Windows will try to emulate it using translated commands, this usually suffers slower times in ripping mostly, it is ALWAYS prefered to have it installed as many programs require it to access your drives.

Just a quote from the Adaptec site to clear up the confusion over the ASPI layer issue. It drove me nuts under Win98 for one of my CD burners. No longer a problem with XP.
From Adaptec:
There are no ASPI drivers produced by Adaptec for Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
Details:
If you are searching for an ASPI driver for Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, there are no ASPI drivers for these operating systems from Adaptec. There are also no ASPI drivers for the Unix operating systems.
Adaptec understands some third party vendors of products, such as scanners and tape drives and other devices, are sending customers to the Adaptec web site to download an ASPI driver for these Operating Systems. If you have been misdirected to our site, looking for an ASPI driver for one of these operating systems, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Microsoft has made major design changes in the structure of their operating systems. Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP are not designed to use the older style ASPI layer and undesirable results can and will happen if the older style ASPI layer is installed on your computer system. This is a design specification of the operating system and is controlled by the manufacturer of the operating system.
Products being produced for Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, must be “ compliant “ with these operating systems. One should check with the manufacturers of products for any updates for their devices and software to run under the new operating systems by Microsoft.
Caution: Because of this the ASPI32.EXE that is posted on the Adaptec Inc. WEB site, should not be installed on these operating systems. This version of the ASPI layer is designed for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, and Windows NT 4.0, ONLY and should not be installed into any other operating system.

Unfortunatly the ASPI Layer included with Me, 2000 and XP is so misreable (like everything else Microsoft does) that no other program (except Adaptec and those that provide their own like Nero and BlindWrite) can work with it, and oh, almost forgot, i've installed the "older" ASPI Layer on several ME, 2K and XP and no side effects so far, except that the programs can now work properly
And I like those side effects
