  1. I'm definitely changing my CPU for a new one (at least MB and CPU).
So far I'm new to the 64 hardware; I have checked out a few sites and I have a few questions:

There appears to be 2 kinds of processors, the socket 754 and the 939. Which one is the best?
The mainboard I've been looking is this one:
    http://www.compuvest.us/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=23176
Do you think it's good enough?, or do you have a better suggestion? (links please, or model#)
That's for the mainboard, and for the processor, once I learn the differences between both options, I will choose one (I'm wide open to suggestions).
Currently, I have an AMD Athlon 2400+ 2.0 Ghz, and I would like to change into something I will feel faster.

Thanks for your help in advance.[/url]

The 754 is dieing, don't go down with it. Get yourself a shiny new 939 proc (whatever you can comfortably afford) and a nforce4 939 mobo and comfort in the fact that you not only will have a superb machine, but also that you won't have to upgrade your mobo when AMD starts to ship their dual-core procs in the summer
Your base? Well, they belong to me now...

  3. I've been watching a lot of these new 64 Motherboards, and I noticed that most of them does not have AGP slots now... Is AGP turning obsolete?, all these mobos comes with PCI-E x16 slots or something like that, or these slots are compatible with AGP?

No, PCI-E seems to have become the successor to AGP. Look for all the new video cards to be PCI-E first, AGP second if at all.

The nForce4 boards are nice, better than the Intel PCI-E solution these days. Look into the Asus board that suits your needs first.

I've been using a 939 AMD processor for a couple of months now and I"m happy with it. Check my computer details for specifics. I went with a Gigabyte MB and a 3200+ processor. If you go for 939, make sure you get a 90nm processor, Winchester core. There are still a lot of 939's with the older 130nm cores.

You need to change over to a PCI-E video card, but there's a lot on the market now. Wave of the future anyway.

The AMD processor is easy to overclock, if you want. Runs very cool compared to other AMD processors.

Microsoft has the 64bit OS on the market now. When the rest of the software catches up, should be really fast.

++ - happy w/ my 939.... although fast, to me. is more an opinion than fact... Some apps did not have the "intensity" I was looking for...

makntraks, I agree, I have seen no great speed increases, but I'm still hoping that MS comes through for me with an OS that really takes advantage of the 64 bit processors . Not a lot of 64 bit software out there, either. But I'm willing to wait a little.

Windows XP 64-bit Edition should actually be out pretty soon. Whether all your devices work with it is another thing altogether. Also software companies are gonna lag hard on making 64-bit editions of things just yet. For example the company I work for has thousands of 32-bit systems being used for DCC and output. So let's say Adobe's next wave of software is 64-bit only we won't be able to upgrade to it since the company is stingy as hell and will raise a stink with bedpartners M$ about it. I'm sure there are several other companies thinking the same.

  10. I'd know you'd be able to find a 939 board with agp seeings how the agp spec is hardly dead. pci-e hasn't matured in todays boards to make a diff. worth the change. By the time pci-e matures to make that diff. you'll be buying a new board and cpu anyways...........
