  1. Hi Gang,

I got a Optorite dual cd/dvd rw drive in my PC. I have copied some old VHS stuff onto a Datawrite (yellow top) dvd using my Panasonic dvd writer.

However, when I come to playing the dvd on my pc with the Optorite drive, it comes up with a "no disc" error. I can play the DVD successfully on other pc's, stand alone dvd players, but not on my Optorite.

I think it may be something to do with the Optorite but cant be sure. Does anyone out there have any ideas etc. For info it has been been upgraded to the latest firmware that I could find on Optorite's website.

    Many Thanks

Are you certain that your current Optorite drive can handle the specific +R/-R media that was used to burn from your Panasonic DVD Writer?

Basic question, let's start there first...

  3. Absolutely. It's a dual cd/ddvd writer combo and plays pre-recorded dvds (eg. films etc.) fine, just doesnt seem to recognise the Datawrite dvds that i burn from the Panasonic stand alone writer.

    Thanks

OK, let's go through this one more time:

What format of disc did you use in your Panasonic DVD writer? DVD-R? DVD+R? DVD+R DL?

Second, what formats does your Optorite read? Aside from CD's, what DVD formats does it handle? +R/RW? -R/RW? Or does it handle them both?

What are the specific models of the Panasonic Writer and the Optrite drive?

The more info we have the better we'll be able to assist you, ok?

    Let us know.

  5. Sorry fella,

    I misread your post.

I used a DVD-R in my Panasonic DVD Writer. It can handle either DVD-R or DVD-Ram. Secondly, the Optorite model reads CD-Rs, CD-RWs, CD-Rom & DVD-Rom.

The Panasonic DVD writer model is DMR-E60 and the Optorite is DC4801.

Starnge, but my Optorite DVD writer, which is Model # DD0405 can read any DVD-R recorded in my Panasonic DVD writer, yet when I come to playing it in my CD/DVD combo drive it doesnt respond.

So, as far as I am aware it is something to do with that particular model of DVD drive.

    Many Thanks

Ah, that's shedding some light on the issue! So tell me, have you gotten *any* of the DVD's you've made from your Panasonic set-top to read and/or play in the Optorite combo drive? If so, were they the same media you used here, or were they a different brand?

Something else I can tell you is - not all of the DVD-ROMs can read all of the various DVD-R/W or DVD+R/W media on the market. I've got an old reliable Samsung combo drive that had the same problem, finally got a combo DVD/CD writer with Dual Layer & Dual Format capabilities to handle that issue once and for all.

Keep the info coming, we'll get this one licked . . .

  7. Appreciate the input fella.

I cannot get any of the DVDs I have burned using my Panasonic writer to work with the Optorite Combi, they work fine with the second drive in my PC (ie. the Optorite DVD Writer) but not the combi. All other DVD related media work fine for example pre-recorded dvds such as movies or software.

I did read somwhere that not all of the blank recording media out there would work with various dvd drives, so this could well be one of them, although the Datawrite brand has been fairly reliable.

Like I said earlier I have upgraded the firmware to the latest one that thier website has provdided, but that doesnt seem to have an effect.

    Cheers

Yes sir, sounds like the exact same problem I had - the only way around it that I found, even after upgrading the firmware TWICE, was to replace that drive with a DVD +-R/W Dual Layer / CD-R/W combo, and once I did I was able to see all of the movies and videos I'd burned elsewhere, no problem.

BTW, I gave the old Samsung to my son for his own use, and he at least can watch pre-recorded (store-bought) DVD's and burn his own CD's now, so the drive wasn't a total loss.

Best wishes finding a suitable replacement, rareair!
