    are you gonna make dvd or svcd? then don't deinterlace.

    I am making a dvd out of an mpeg file that is the result of a converted video tape of a TV movie.

    A VHS to DVD conversion then ?

    Never deinterlace an interlaced source. The only possible situation where you might consider deinterlacing is if playback is only ever going to be on your computer, but even then you should probably just use software that will properly deinterlace on the fly, such as PowerDVD.
