  1. I am trying to do a backup with DVD Shrink (v 3.2). I gets about 37% into the analyzing of the disk and then tells me it can't read the drive - Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? It does the same thing on both my DVD drive and my DVD-RW drive as well even after cleaning both drives.

    Thanks,
    Vance

  2. You probably have one of the following 2 problems:-

    1) A dirty disc

    2) A badly scratched disc

Check the disc surface and clean if required, if its badly scratched you can keep trying but in my experience it wont work.

You could also try ripping the disc to your hard drive with DVDdecrypter in file mode, this sometimes works. But if the disc is damaged then there aren't a lot of choices available, unless someone else has any ideas.

I have in the past been able to complete the read by trying the disc in another drive but you've already tried that.

  3. Look at the dvd. See if theres anything wrong with it, scratches finger prints. DVD Decrypter will work when you use it. Then use DVD Shrink.

  5. I think updating the program only really helps for DVDdecrypter when DVD's are using the new encryption format.
I think this guys problem is probably a dirty or damaged disc.
But it certainly does no harm in having the latest software.

Do an all-forums search on "cyclic redundancy check" and I think you'll find that it generally occurs when the disc is either scratched or has fingerprints/smudges of some description on it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  7. CRC's arent from Sony's protection. But as mentioned above, check your disks. There are also many other topics on this.

apparently the individual who developed it is now working for Ahead (that's nero, folks), so there most likely will never be an update to DVDShrink.

  9. Yeah I've read that DVDSHRINK will no longer be updated.
Bit of a shame as it's such a useful tool, but at least the version he leaves us with works great.

  10. Just an update, I tried cleaning the disk and that didn't help any. Looking a it I find that it is pretty scratched up. Since I am still fumbling my way thru all of this I decided last night to try and do it the long way. I ripped it to my hard drive with DVD Decryter last night and then went at it with DVD Shrink and it seemed to have worked fine.

I appreciate all the input and if I run into this problem again, this will be the method of making a backup.

    Thanks again,
    Vance
