Okay, never considered myself a NooB, but guess I am

Okay so I've been encoding Avi and Mpg movies to Dvd format with WinAvi. So far so boring.
I burn the files to Disc with the latest version of Nero Vision.

However when I start watching my film, round about the mid point of the movie it jumps, pauses and more likely than not stops altogether.

This as I'm sure you know is not the way a film should be watched!

I'm not sure what model my Burner is. All it says is Dvd Dual 8x.
Now I've learnt from burning Audio CDs never to burn at max. So all Dvds I burn at 6x, just in case.

The media that I use are Ritek G-05 Arita Branded 8x DVD+R, which I was led to believe were ok.

I've played the disc through on my computer, with no problems. However when it gets played on a standalone dvd or ps2, skips ahoy!

Be kind to this (old) new Noob!

Wish I could help but I cant....I just wanted to say I use WinAvi as well and I burn at 8X on Memorex + or - disks and never had a problem yet and I also use Nero. Im no expert but I think I would try different media. Good luck!

Oh...and mine play on ps2 and standalone players
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

    Sounds like bad media.

    And your description sounds wrong.
    DVD-R is RITEKG05.
    DVD+R is something else RITEK.

Ritek media has not been "high quality" media since about 2003.
Sure, it USUALLY works, but about 10-20% of the time, duds.

i found that when my movies skipped or froze near the end it was 95% of the time bad media, the other 5 % was using labels, going to better quality dvd's and not using labels cured 99.5% of the skipping freezing problems.

Can you please define what you mean by 'using labels'?

Labels that you print on and then stick to a dvd.

And there was me thinking labels was some sort of code! Do I feel dumb!
So we are still feeling that this is a bad media issue then?
Should I go to dvd- then?

  10. I have had a similar experience with cheap media -- if I burn with Nero, it would play OK on my computer, skip a bit on my standalone, and refuse to play at all on my friend's Cyberhome player!

Same folders, same media, but burnt with DVD Decrypter -- played fine on all three players.

(I've never had much luck with Nero )

  11. Arita are often marketed as B grade media. I have never had any problems with Ritek media, but with so many online stores selling Arita stuff without warranty or making it clear it's not top line stuff, personally I wouldn't touch them again.

I use B grade media occasionally for small projects and / or temporary storage, but for anything you want to keep they're not worth the trouble. There is better media - including better Ritek - out there.

  13. I think some wires got crossed in the product description.

Arita 8X DVD+R should be media code RITEKR03. Use DVDInfoPro to identify your media.

I've never used it myself, but it has gotten mostly good with some mixed reviews here on VideoHelp:
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=2535#comments

Arita 8X DVD-R is media code RITEKG05, and it has gotten almost all good reviews:

Out of several hundred succesful burns for a corporate job,
only the ARITA's failed to play
We used Verbatim, Pioneer Media (no longer made) and Maxel
    successfully

Cheer for all the info guys.
Could one of you advise me on how I can burn a dvd with dvd decrypter? As I didn't realise that was a burning tool as well.
I was always led to believe that Nero was the big daddy of burning software.
Any tips just so I can watch a film all the way through without wanting to take a large stick to my television!

  16. How to burn with DVDDecrypter:

There's no guarantee that a DVDR will play in all standalones but using "made in Japan" media will increase your odds.

Can someone let me know if I'm likely to get a better result from a dvd rip if I burn in Dvd decrypter after making an iso file, rather than using Nero via dvd shrink.
    Thanks muchly

As with most others, my first thought was bad media and although it probably still is (I would never use Ritek media from my bad experiences), your discs only skip on your DVD player and not on your burner which means they may play on other DVD players but not yours. The good thing is that you can use these discs for backing up data on your PC but you'll need to find some good "Made In Japan" discs to burn DVDs or find a cheap DVD player that will play these discs.

Can someone let me know if I'm likely to get a better result from a dvd rip if I burn in Dvd decrypter after making an iso file, rather than using Nero via dvd shrink.
When I back up movies, I use DVDdecrypter to rip, DVDshrink to fit on one DVD and DVDdecrypter to burn and it hasn't kept the skipping from happening on bad media. A DVDshrink guide that I looked at from their website recommends lowering the file size to prevent skipping on bad media since it is usually caused from a defect in the outer edge of the disc.
