I realized if my clips can be represented as fields per second (NTSC), then I would have twice the acurracy to synch my audio to. Anybody know an editor that will allow you to work with fields on the timeline instead of frames? I use Mediastudio Pro, right now.

Most pro editing systems allow audio sync to at least 8-16 subframes. This is important for matching special effects sounds (e.g. gunshot, explosion, glass break.)

Is a subframe a field? I can't afford SMPTE, go easy on me.

Although... Wait! I suppose I could convert my video from drop frame to SMPTE in Mediastudio and then synch it off of SMPTE which gives 1/999th accuracy.

I could then synch it in Audition, using SMPTE and import the track.

    16 subframes = 1/16 frame or 1/8 field
This is done by oversampling the timeline.

I've never done this at home but the pro post community demanded that it be done.

It's generally taken that audio needs subframe resolution for pro work.

But I could just convert the video and audio to SMPTE and then line up the audio, right?

    I'm not sure about MediaStudio.

Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro support sub frame audio editing and placement.

I do it in Vegas 5 by opening the file in Sound Forge. There may be another way.

You get there by zooming into a clip timeline until one frame video resolution is seen then work inside the frame on audio tracks.

Here is a link to a guy describing pop removal in FCP.
