    We appreciate your input in choosing a DVD recorder unit with or w/o VHS. Budget up to $500.

    With $500 to spend, I'd suggest the Pioneer 520H. It does everything the 220 does, plus it has a hard drive. You can't beat having a hard drive for simple editing. If you want to more sophisticated editing, you'll have to rip the DVD disc to your computer hard drive.

    Me too!

    Bought a 520 about 18 monhs ago and it's been excellent - in fact, I bought a 420 (same as 520 but no firewire) on the strength of the 520 just for VHS backups.

    You can get the Sony RDR-HX900 with a 160GB HD & TV Guide built-in, you can't go wrong with that unit. You'll have to haggle with the dealer, but I had little problems getting them to drop the price for me; if they don't walk out.

    How much did you buy the sony for? They're about £500 over here so if you can buy them for $500 then we are seriously being screwed.

    No change there then! -- I believe the car manufatureres call the UK 'Treasure Island' --- and so presumably do the DVD Recorder makers!

    No shipping from a local store, just a short ride from the house, Yes there was tax; total out the door to my car = $535.00 US Dollars.
