backing up dvd with standalone

Hi, I recently purchased a stand alone recorder and was wondering if you can backup dvds with it or is copyright always going to get in the way. I remember back in the day you could use a video stabilizer and a vcr to get around the copyright on any tape to make a backup. Or is the only way to remove the protection through software? Any help would be appreciated.

Sima GoDVD or a full frame TBC

It's better and faster to backup DVD's on the computer with software... DVDShrink, etc.

Wal Mart has the Pioneer DVR-220-S for less than $200. Great return policy if you don't like it, too.

Going back to the original question. The answer is Yes, if you can get a hacked Apex player.

The recorder I purchased is the Sony RDR GX 300. I noticed you can buy the Sima GoDvd on ebay, will this remove protection and allow me to back up retail dvds and VHS?

You would be far better off to take that money and buy a burner. They last longer, take less time to do most backups, plus give the option of keeping menus, extras, etc. Unless the disc uses high compression, in that case you can always use 2 discs but you'll lose the menus, they will look better.

For movie only will GoDvd do the job? What can't it do?

It will probably work. I've done them on a standalone and a burner both, the burner is the way to go. Not much sense in having a backup that is inferior in quality to the original to me. Alot of movies can be done 1:1 with an exact copy of the original, if you just keep the movie and no menus and extras with a burner. It's going to be that way with a standalone anyway. You can get a burner for $50 or less.
