  1. I have a Sony DCR-DVD203 camcorder which records to 3" DVD-R. I recorded a DVD, then dropped it into my computer's DVD drive, and the DVD played just fine.

OK, so now what I want to do is put my creation up on the Internet in one of the popular video formats (MPG, AVI, WMV, RM, etc) but the files on the DVD don't seem to be supported by programs like Windows Movie Maker.

The files on my DVD are:

    Directory \VIDEO_TS
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_02_0.BUP
    VTS_02_0.IFO
    VTS_02_1.VOB

What do I do? Thanks in advance!

  3. Thanks, I'll check all that out. Why do you recommend DiVX? I hate that when I click on an AVI file at a web site, I get an error saying "QuickTime can't handle this format" and I have to run an external program to play the file.

  5. Thanks a boat load. Hey, you left off MPG. Any specific reason?

    or
    tmpgenc xpress and make mpg!

but if you want smallest size with decent quality I would use wmv, divx,rm instead of mpg1 or mpg2.

  7. Why didn't DiVX go with a different file extension than .AVI? AVI defaults to QuickTime, then QuickTime complains it can't handle DiVX.

  8. I see tmpgenc xpress is $60 versus fairusewizard's $0. There's incentive right there to go DiVX instead of WMV.

    Not exactly true
Your computer is set up to use QT to open AVI's. Probably QuickTime "hijacked" the AVI file association when you installed it, to make itself the default application for playing AVI's, even though it can't handle DivX.

  13. Yeah, when I played the .avi file from the DOS command line, Windows Media Player played it. So at the operating system level, WMP has the file extension association, and at the browser level (Netscape 7.2), QuickTime has the association.
