You might get a slight improvement.
You gotta beef it up under the hood, son. (get a faster processor)

Given your current specs: Athlon xp2000, 40GB HD, 512MB RAM & 98SE O/S, I'm fairly confident in saying that upgrading from 512MB to 1024MB in will NOT result in any noticable speed-up in DVD-Shrink or in anything else you might run.

If it were me, and I wanted to stay with my current CPU & motherboard, I'd look into adding a second harddrive and / or upgrading my O/S. In my opinion that would give you the most bang for your upgrade bucks.

By the way, DVD-Shrink is a transcoder and not an encoder. My experience with upgrading is that encoding and transcoding times are fairly linear to CPU speed. For example, when I upgraded my computer from a 733-MHz PIII to a 2600-MHz P4 my encoding and transcoding times speed-up by a factor of 3 to 3.5. For example, an encode that use to take around 3.5 hours on my old machine now takes around 1-hour.

As Shocker posted, if you really want to NOTICABLY speed up things a faster CPU is in order.

  4. Yeah if you have Win9x/Me having >512MB of RAM can cause problems.Encoding/transcoding is CPU intensive and buying a faster CPU is the best "bang for the buck",check your motherboard website to see if it supports a faster CPU and a BIOS update.

You would get a bigger bang for the buck by adding a second hard disk. Rip to C: and shrink to D: for example. Using two Physical drives (not two logical drives on one physical drive) will speed things up as the hard disk heads won't be seeking all over reading then writing.

Should be an easy upgrade upgrade and cost effective. And it will still payoff when you upgrade your motherboard/cpu.

    Cheers

  6. (S)He clearly stated it is Win2000.... NOT Win98 as you folks thought...

Yes, you will see slight increase IF you config your OS properly. However, I would still think that getting a faster CPU (and SATA drives - 8M if you wish ) would be your better alternative.
It's time to kick some butts, and presto ( if you know what I mean )

I might have a slight suggest here..

    How about:

    * Adding more ram, and then
    * create a 1gig ram-drive

Then, you only have to set the "Encoder To" to the ram-drive.
When you author, it probably will go quicker because now, you are getting
your video data from the ram-drive.

As long as you don't have a fear from any power-outages, you're set to go,
which in all honestly, you really don't have anything to worry about.

    Windows 98 ...

I forget how to set this up. I've ben meaning to give this a try myself, but
    I forget the DOS script
    .
    Does anybody know how ??

  9. I have a 2.2g machine, XP Pro and just under a gig of memory and it still takes approx 15 mins to encode for most DVDs.

From numerous posts here, this seems to be the normal time for alot of people, and I am sure their systems of different specs.

So I'd venture to say no, the extra memory won't increase Shrink's ability to encode FASTER, but you may see some improvements.

It's def worth the jump though, makes life so much easier for everything else you do on a daily basis
