  1. OK,

I have both version 1.5.20.62 and version 1.6.26.73 of Tmpgenc DVD Author.

When I author the EXACT same .mpv file and .mpa file with the exact same settings and no menus - I am getting two very different VIDEO_TS folder sizes.

Version 1.5 gives me a folder size of roughly 4.36 gigabytes spread over 5 .VOB files

Version 1.6 gives me a folder size of roughly 3.44 gigabytes spread over 4 .VOB files

Why the difference? How can version 1.6 give me a folder size almost 1 gigabyte smaller than the actual .mpv and .mpa files?

When comparing the VOB files of the 1.6 output, I can't find what is missing to make it so small. The VOBs are longer in length than the 1.5 output ones - roughly 25 minutes each versus approx. 21 minutes. And the video still seems to be "all there". How can this be?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe version 1.5 was encoding the audio to wav and 1.6 is encoding to mp2.

    Thanks for the reply,

As mentioned in my original post, all settings are EXACTLY the same between the two versions - including the audio.

Still scratchin' my head on this one....

  5. I am having the same experience. There are also a number of other posts about the topic, but no answers. Anyone?

"I don't know why but after trying every burning method, I tried to reauthor the dvd with TMPGEnc Author and works!!! but the vobs that have the main video are a little smaller than the originals.

How could i reauthor a dvd without losing quality?"

    Hello,

Anytime you reencode you lose a little quality. No way around that. But you won't lose a lot if you keep the bitrates close to the originals.

You are correct, however there is no re-encoding happening here!

We are only using TDA to Author, for me just to add menus. I have confirmed the audio is not re-encoding also. There are a few similar threads, but still no definitive answer. It does appear the video bitrates are changing, but why?

TDA definitely exhibits some shady behavior. Theoretically, it shouldn't re-encode anything unless you have it set to re-encode the audio, but like you said, if the settings are the same, both versions should do the same thing.

You might want to demux the VOB's in both VIDEO_TS folders and compare the sizes of the resulting video and audio streams. Check the bit rates and lengths of both sets of streams too. I'd be interested to hear your results from this.

  9. This issue is back again. It appears TMPGEnc DVD Author is - for whatever - changing my CBR video to VBR video therefore reducing the file size. A 4 gigabyte MPEG2 video file gets reduced to 2.9 gigs. The only re-encoding done is on the audio (MP2 to DD).

I'm at a loss trying to figure out how/why it's doing that but the video quality doesn't seem to be affected.
