I have a Pioneer 104, I never did the firmware upgrade to allow burning 4x media safely, since I had plenty of 2x media.

Now that I'm running out of 2x media, if I do the firmware update, will I be able to burn 8x media safely/successfully on the 104, or is there a danger of harming the burner? The good deals all seem to be on 8x media these days.

Note: I am NOT trying to burn at speeds higher than the burner's rated 2x, I just don't want to damage the laser by using inappropriate media.

    Thanks,

Shouldn't be a problem, but it depends on the specific media you choose.

WRONG as "DVD-R/RW RECORDERS and DRIVES REQUIRE FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR NEW HIGH-SPEED MEDIA"-PIONEER
    You must UPDATE the firmware.
What you will find when you go to burn otherwise is the laser may forget to switch off during a seek during the burn operation and stay on forever ruining the drive

note: not to worry you will always burn at 2x no matter what the media is rated after the update

Right, so as long as the firmware is updated, 4x or 8x doesn't matter in terms of laser damage?
