Using my JVC DRM10SI recorded a VHS tape onto a DVD-RW in Video Mode set to FR 160 and finalized it. I then ripped the DVD with DVD Decrypter in File Mode. Then I merged the movie's VOBs together in using VobMerge, did some cutting with Womble MPEG-VCR, and demuxed the resulting MPG with TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools. I used the resulting M2V and AC3 files for a DVD-Lab project where I added menus & chapters, and finally compiled/authored and then burnt the disc in DVD-Lab.

The disc plays fine on my computer and in my Apex AD-1500 DVD player. However, when I play it on the DRM10S, the video plays with an odd jerkiness and the audio goes out every few seconds. Any idea what's up?

    Thanks!

It's DVD-Lab's fault. It does not author 100% compliant DVDs.

I've used it before without problems...what's a similar authoring app in terms of features/flexibility that IS 100% compliant?

Is there any fix to the DVD-Lab problem in the IFOs or anything?

    David,

Instead of using File Mode, use IFO mode in DVD Decrypter and set File Split to None. You will get one VOB file instead of multiple files and can eliminate merging step with VobMerge.

Regarding audio, I didn't have any audio dropouts with my unit, but some people at AVS forum reported this problem with their units. Also lordsmurf may be right too.

Thanks, I'll remember that for next time.

The audio recorded fine. The unit is making the video look weird and hiccuping on the audio when playing back the DVD after authoring in DVD-Lab.

I have had problems with DVD Lab authored stuff before too.
That's why I stay away from it.

  7. In addition to what Smurf said, there's also the issue of merging vobs, or any 2 mpeg files. Most of the playback problems reported on this forum seem to result either from editing/merging mpeg files or authoring 'em with crapware.

I got slammed a week or so ago for pointing that most of the DVD authoring/mpeg editing software out there is junk, but this is another example IMHO. There are very very few pieces of software that I would consider using to merge and/or edit mpeg streams. And VobMerge isn't one of 'em. Womble has given me good solid results. Cuttermaran seems to be free of bugs. M2 edit pro can't handle ac3 but if you demux the ac3 and fiddle and diddle you will get excellent results from assemble or join edits of the m2v elementary video stream using M2 Edit Pro, tho the lack of ac3 support & all the muxing and demuxing you have to do makes that program a huge pain in the A. Other than those 3, I can't recommend any other mpeg-2 editing/joining programs. All too often they wind up transcoding the video and turning it to junk (without telling you, either) or introducing gross errors that make your video freeze up or hiccup when you play it back.

Bottom line? Mpeg-2 streams were never intended to be edited and there are precious few programs that can do it right. I'd stick with Womble and Cuttermaran and that's about it. If you can't do it with those programs, best not to try. Just brute-force it and convert to Type 2 DV and do the edit and re-encode.
