I am about to order a new PC with 2 - 250gb SATA hard drives.
Will these drives show up separately in My Computer?
i.e..the operating system on one and one empty for my captured video files?
And will they be assigned 2 drive names such as C: and G: for instance.
Thanks for your time.

Most likely yes. If the new PC utilizes RAID 0 then it would show up as one large 500GB drive or RAID 1 would show up as a single 250GB drive. If there is a RAID option on your new PC I would leave it disabled.

I know of no manufacturer that will set Raid 0, or 1 as a default. They should show as two drives, probably C and D, with the laser device(s) after that.

They will show as C and D drives. Cool thing about this is you can install windows on D, throws would be attackers off.
I have three drives, here is what I do with mine.
One drive is 160 GB, it contains all of my family pictures and videos and important Aps , even Phone numbers and stuff I always need for some reason. I back this drive up once a month on 2-5 DVD's.
One drive has my windows installed, another drive has all my program files.
Pretty cool when you need to re-install windows like I do once a month and you don't have to worry about losing anything.
Backing up your drives is very important.
Here is how I back up my drives...
I simply make a data DVD (no multisession) and drag all my data on to it using Nero. Then I mark my DVD's and go about my happy go lucky day.
In 8 years I have yet to lose too much of anything. Well that is because I am super paranoid. lmao
Good luck with the new computer. sata... sweeeeeet!!
My Abit has sata but me spent all my money on video and other imaging crap. But I am happy.. for now (evil grins for wifey) lol -
There are OEMs who will enable RAID on your PC if you so choose, Alienware being one of them. I think even Dell may have the option to start with RAID if there is a controller equipped. OEMs put the OS on for you so if you're going to have the boot volume striped/mirrored it would have to come that way from the manufacturer.

I remember at least one or two VPR Matrix (Best Buy brand) PCs that came preset with a RAID stripe set.

Take advantage of Intel's fastest technology, the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor 3.06A GHz with Hyper-Threading, all the speed of two 120.0GB RAID 0-enabled hard drives, and the latest GeForce4 Ti4200 graphics and Creative Labs Soundblaster® Live 5.1 audio. Watch or record video using both DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drives.
Admittedly, a rare beast. It's just something I had remembered seeing in the stores a while back.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
