Would some helpful person tell me if this will work please?
My PC is an HP Pavilion 7965...
I have on it's way to me (via eBay) an AMD Athlon XP2400 this is to replace my existing Athlon XP1800.
My questions are:
1) Will this work with mobo I have?
2) Can I use the existing heat sink and fan?
In other words can I just take out the old one and refit the new one and reboot?
As you can guess I am not very technical. I have not done this sort of thing before although I have fitted a new HDD and some memory.
Thanks for your help
Here are my specs:

Is your new CPU a Palomino core, or a T-Bird, or???
Upgrading a proprietary HP is very hit or miss.
It may work, or you may blow something up.
Is it a "self-detecting" mobo for cpu core voltage, frequency and multiplier, or do you have jumpers?
If you have jumpers, can you specify the freq and multi?Cheers, Jim

All questions you should have asked before purchasing a new CPU maybe?

Plus it appears the BIOS pre-dates the cpu- might oughta update it before hand.

"All questions you should have asked before purchasing a new CPU maybe?"
I relied on the Crucial Memory site to mis-identify my mobo. It came up with another model which is why I ordered it.
"Is your new CPU a Palomino core, or a T-Bird, or??? "
It's a...
Brand New AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Processor
Thoroughbred core
Model Number AXDA2400DKV3C
"Plus it appears the BIOS pre-dates the cpu- might oughta update it before hand"
I'm not sure what this means? -
The Asus web site should have a MoBo support page whereby you plug in model number a7m266 and check cpu support. Depending on Bios revision dates the support for larger ghz cpu's can change. Early board revisions can add additional support to later tech advancements by a bios revision. Not everything, mind you, but added cpu support is very often included with these BIOS Updates. If you lucky you won't need any bios revision.

A word of caution be careful when removing the heatsink-fan to get at the CPU in order to replace it. The below is what happened to me when I went to change out my heatsink/fan. After the below happen to me I did a google search and found that apparently this is not that uncommon.

Asus support may, or may not help, because this is a mobo manufactured specifically for HP, and is NOT the same as a retail a7m266!
At the least, you are going to need a BIOS update.
Downloading and installing one from Asus may render your computer useless, depending on how badly HP screwed with the BIOS.
Going from a Palomino core to a Thoroughbred core requires a different voltage. If the BIOS doesn't allow you to change it, you will blow up your new chip, because the Palomino uses a higher voltage.
I would immediately attempt to return the CPU for a refund, sell the HP to my worst enemy, and purchase a new computer.Cheers, Jim
