I have an xvid/avi file that I have converted to MPEG-2 720x576 25fps VBR 8000kbps, Layer-2 48000Hz 384kbps with TMPGEnc Plus. I then import this file into TMPG DVD Author, create menues and burn the resulting audio_ts and video_ts folders to a DVDR. Picture is fine but the audio is not there if I play the dvd on my Yamaha home theatre system. If I turn on the TV's volume everything is fine. Where am I making my mistake? Do I have to convert the avi file in a different way? Are there any plug-ins that I need?

do you get any audio on your computer?
have you tried wav or ac3 instead of mpa/mp2 audio?
have you tried change the audio settings on your dvd player, something like output mpa/mp2 to wav/pcm.

There is sound when played thru PowerDVD on my computer. I have tried wav with no success. I can get sound on my standalone player if I change the sound output to PCM but that means problems with a normal dvd unless I keep chainging back and forth, doesn't? I would prefer encoding the dvd correctly from the beginning.

Use ac3 then. You get the tmpgenc ac3 plugin for tmpgenc dvd author.

read about the dvd audio standards:
