This is probably really basic, but I'm just not seeing it right now - advice is appreciated.
I want to extract a few 1-2minute video clips from some dvd movies and concerts and save them as normal MPEG2 files for a class project.
I used CladDVD, DVDecrypter and VOB2MPG successfully to get the VOB file(s) I need off the DVD's to the hard drive.
I didn't see any articles on 'how to back-up from DVD to MPEG2" or anything, but noticed that if I changed the .vob extension to .mpg, I was able to load and play the file in TMPGenc 2.5 Plus's MPEG tools. I set the in and out points and hit run, and it renders the video, but when I play the finished MPG file, there is no audio. I checked here and installed the AC3 plugin, but still no dice.
I noticed that if I drag raw original mpg file (ie.the one I just renamed from *.vob into *.mpg) into Vegas, it shows both a video and audio track. When I do the same for my cutout piece, it just shows video. I suppose I can use Vegas to re-render a short clip, but it takes forever to re-render, and I assume its doing some re-processing. Note also that I wanted to extract a clip from a concert DVD that says it has uncompressed LPCM audio on it and one from a regular movie DVD which I assume has compressed AC3 (or whatever?) audio - same thing each time.
Obviously I goofed and/or missed a step - can someone spell it out or point me to a guide that shows the details - I don't want to convert the file to MPG1 or Divx or AVI - just want to cut out a small section from a .VOB and render it to an MPEG2 file that plays sound and picture. I'm not sure I saw anything on this specifically, or if I did, I totally clued out.
Your gentle wisdom is appreciated.

Look under the "How to" section to the left. "Converting DVD to MPEG". TMPGEnc is but one program that can do this. Once you have your MPEG, use an editor like TMPGEnc MPEG Editor and you'll have your clips.

I don't know how my above answer got screwed up so bad, but use TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert to MPEG. Look under the "How To" section to the left and you will find "convert" DVD to MPEG. Once you have your MPEG use and editor like TMPGEnc MPEG Editor to chop the parts out you want. If you plan on doing this kind of work you will want to invest in some programs like these.

You can use DVDDecrypter's IFO mode to select only the chapters you want, and in the stream processing tab, you can choose to demux video and audio tracks (or keep them together, but not including any other unwanted audio or subpicture stream).
BTW, never rename a *.vob file to *.mpg; they are NOT the same.
If cutting by chapters is not enough, you can try Cuttermaran -
Just a follow up on what worked for me in terms of wanting to convert DVD to MPG2, based on what I learned in this thread and some surfing of other guides:
Summary of steps to extracting a dvd video to an mpeg2 file:
- Rip dvd with Dvd Decrypter or Clad - since I was just looking for small snippets, I just took a reasonable guess as to which VTS file likely had the part I wanted and just ripped that file. My experience was that things worked better with Dvd Decrypter when I enabled stream processing from IFO mode and removed streams other than the primary audio.
- Using Dvd2avi select the VOB file just created, then set video/field operation to Forced Film, and set the Audio to Track Number 1 and the Output Method to Decode to Wav.
If you are doing more than one segment, you can list them all and process them together.
Then click on Save Project and specifiy a file name. This should create .wav and .d2v file.
Do not delete original VOB file yet as this is where video resides.
- Using Tmpgenc (either in valid trial or activated mode to enable MPEG2 funtionality) at the main screen (not the Wizard), for Video Source choose the .d2v file and for audio source choose the .wav file (even though these are likely 0byte files).
Make sure the Stream Type is set to System Video+Audio to have an integrated MPG2 file, and make sure the the process setting DVD (PAL or NTSC) has been loaded.
Then click Start at the top of the screen.
The output is an MPG2 file of the video+audio extracted from the DVD. You can cut this file as needed using the MPEG Tools in TMPGEnc as required.
Hope this helps.
