  2. The BenQ is ugly. And slower on -R and much slower on dual layer. Im not sure if it supports -R DL, the disks will hit the shops any time now, -R DL support is is better to have than not to have.

Edit: My bad, its not slower on -R

get the BENQ 1620....i have 2 of them and they burn both -/+ very well.....i have already suggested you check out the forums at cdfreaks.com....this has been discussed already quite extensively....you're going to have different opinions each time....do your research & buy what you can afford....every brand of dvd burners will have their problems or defects.....in my opinion the BENQ 1620 blows the PIONEER 109, the BENQ has bitsetting out of the box and has new firmware quite often to support the newer dvd media. nuff said....

I agree with Budz. I have a BenQ 1620 and it works like a champ. Doesn't do -R DL, but I generaly don't much care about -R anyway. It's +R all the way for me, single as well as double layer. The bitsetting feature is fantastic.

Pioneer is a good drive too, judging from owners' reports here, but it doesn't bitset single layer out of the box. You have get an unauthorized firmware patch for that, and that would invalidate your warranty.

BenQ1620 by a LANDSLIDE...it's an awesome drive. I own two, and they're fantastic.

You can burn a 16X disc in as little as 5:18 w/ WOPC disabled...MCSE it, and you can rip uber fast, automatic bitsetting outta the box, and a good reader to boot.

Because while writing to these forums, wife was kind enough to say why not buy both, and I replied, only have money for one, then she replied I will buy the other. I'm lucky!

Well I have the "ugly/slower" Benq 1620, and I haven't had a problem. I don't use -r media, never have never will. Also, what the hell do you mean it's slower on DL media. It burns @ 4x just like other dl burners? How can it be slower? What do you mean by Ugly? Does it really matter what it looks like, it just sits in your computer tower, or an external case? What do you want it to have a beautiful lcd on front so you can watch it burn?

The Pioneer is 6x on DL media, stable quality burns, and does both -R DL and +R DL. For DL, Pioneer has the distinct advantage. More for quality, than for speed. Speed is just a nice bonus.

Dual layer media is still expensive so it doesn't matter if any dvd burner can burn at 6x DL......Pioneer isn't the only brand that has 6x DL burning, Plextor does as well..... :P

I ordered the 1620 Pro, is it a big difference comapred to the regular 1620? Also I just ordered thru Amazon the Pioneer 109. Both coming soon.

  19. Hopefully you considered newegg.com before you ordered - a Pioneer 109 runs about $60 and a Benq 1620 runs about $50 on there, they have great prices.

Pioneer doesn't have to include fairly useless software to get people to buy and overpriced drive Everybody raves about Plextor but my friends and I have had nothing but problems with Plextor.
