  1. Hi,
    I tried dozens of tools for this, but none of them seem to work well (or at all, for some).

    I'm looking for a small, simple, straightforward program for "clipping" AVI files. That is, I want to trim some of my AVI files that are too large to fit onto a CD. A free, and preferrably spy-and-bundleware-free program would be ideal.

    The AVI files I'm trying to trim are DivX (or Xvid) encoded, I believe. Sorry, I'm a beginner.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  3. Thank you for the suggestion! I downloaded and installed the software and have tried it out. When I try to open one of my files, I get the following error message:

    Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)
    VirtualDub requiers a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

    Can I get something that will get VirtualDub working with this file, or do I need to look for a different program? Thanks again.

    EDIT: The same goes for other files I tried. "Couldn't locate decompressor for format..." for 'XVID', 'DIV3', etc.
    Suggestions?

  4. get a codec pack, found in tools - install the one that suits this video file type.

  5. These files do play correctly in my Windows Media Player. Is that relevant?

  6. Ok, cool. VirtualDub now opens the file. But, there's a new problem...

    I'm following a tutorial about splitting AVI files from VideoHelp.com. Everything looks good EXCEPT the fact that the file being saved is estimated to be 120,000 MB! Holy crap!

    Why is it doing this? How do I keep the file small and just trim a part of it off?

    Hi Quimbly,

    Click:

    Video -> Direct Stream Copy

    ...or words to that effect. This means it will take your trimming settings into account, but not save using the default codec of "uncompressed", which is what it sounds like it's doing at the moment...
