The dcd825 is supposed to play VCDs. I burned one with easyVCD (which has a great GUI) and it plays fine on the PC. On the dvd player the picture is fine, but the sound is funky. There is no sound except for every 7 to 8 seconds, a quick short burst of sound (aprox 1-2 seconds) plays.
I run the dvd player -Svideo into the TV and run the sound into my stereo. Oh one more thing, the remote does not have a mute button.
P.S (what's this firmware update people are talking about - can I really update my DVD player?)

Sounds like the mpeg needs to be remuxed. Try the simple multiplex tool in tmpgenc with the vcd setting.
There is a firmware update for it available from phillips tech support. they mail you a cd that you play in the unit to update the firmware. -
Thanks for the reply. That was exatly the problem. I was trying to manualy set everything but then I went to the web site and read the section on converting the file for a VCD. it basically said - use the template ( which is what you just said) and it works ! Many disks gave their lives for this knowledge.
I would like to contact Philips for the upgrade but I spent each day for a week talking to them about the sound issue and trying to get the freakin manual from them. - do you have any advice for asking for the firmware. Are they willing? -
You can Download the firmware from
http://server33.hypermart.net/dvd-vcd/firmware.htm
It is in spanish (the site) but the upgrade is corect.
Burn it to a cd using iso9660 and mode2
turn on your dvd player, eject tray, put in cd, push tray closed and the upgrade will begin It takes a few minutes and it may turn the dvd player on and off. It will eject the disc when done. remove it and push the tray closed. your done.
