  1. I have had my Philips DVD642/37 since November and it has worked flawlessly.

Tonight as per our usual routine, we were watching a Dvix/Xvid show burned on DVD. I'm using Maxell DVD-RW's as my media. And they have always worked fine.

So what happened is, that we were watching our episode and out no where, the image froze. Fast forward or Rewind were not working. I ejected the disk and put it back in. And I get "NO DISK".

I try my daughter's Dora The Explorer DVD that we just had in about 30 mins ago .. "NO DISK" . I tried a commercial Spiderman 1 DVD. "NO DISK". It is no longer recognizing any DVD's.

It is,however, recognizeing Audio CD's. I put a music CD in and it detected it fine.

This makes no sense, as it has been working all night and in fact it has worked every night since I bought it in November. And as I said, this only started after it just now, froze while watching it.

I have tried unplugging the unit for 15 seconds and back , still getting "No Disk".

Please help me, as I am lost without this unit. This makes no sense at all.

  2. I don't have one of these players, but I think you are now the owner of a defective 642. Apparently this is a common problem, the DVD laser 'dies' on alot of these units and they conveniently only provide a 90 day warranty. Do a search in the forums for more info on the subject.

These are exact symptoms that showed when my oldest Apex half-died. It played only VCDs & CDDAs, no DVDs. I replaced dvd-rom unit and it was resurrected instantly
Maybe its something else in your case, but I'd bet its likely the same problem.

  4. Ok but if it`s the laser that has died, then explain how it can still read audio CD`s just fine.

I was thinking it`s the way it`s seated. Ie: The laser assembly.. but doesn`t explain why it working 100% fine seconds before it happened. Again I was lying down watching the episode that out of no where the image freezes up. And from that point on it no longer detects DVD's? Makes no sense whatsoever. But reads audio fine.

  5. Btw, I just thought I'd mention, that I have done searches here. I could not find anything in relation to my DVD player in particular. Lots of DVP642 threads, but none that seem to have my particular problem. I guess that`s a good thing in a way, since it might mean that my problem is a fluke and not common place with this model.

Anyway thought I`d mention that, in case some of you were thinking "do a damn search". I have and can`t find anything.

    Thanks,
    Zanatar.

  6. I don't know if there are two lasers for reading DVD's and CD's, but the something about the characteristics of the laser is different when reading one or the other.

Learn HOW to 'do a damn search' then. It IS commonplace and it's NOT a fluke, as I eluded to before. I have no clue how you overlooked this recent thread in your search.

  8. There are two different lasers in the DVP642, your DVD laser has blown up. This is common around the six month mark and you just hit that.
Sorry, Philips is junk, join the "no disk of death" club.

They will want $30 (plus you pay shipping) to replace it with a refurbished unit since you are outside the 90 day limited warranty. Don't bother, save your money for a better maker with a year warranty and QPEL/GMC playback.
