Any advantage to burn at say 2x instead of 8x
assuming disk and writer both support 8x

The only advantage is if the dvd quality is crap but for good brands made in japan you can burn at 8x or higher depending on your burner and firmware.

I burn at x4 speed and never had a problem of any description. Four speed takes a maximum of 15 minutes or less and there does seem to more problems reported with burns at faster speeds.
