  1. I have just encoded an mpeg to put on a vcd, it is a tad over 830MB and I would like to simply cut it down to 800MB

Is there a utility that can take the already encoded mpeg and simply cut it down? or will I have to cut it down then re-encode it?

    Cheers

When you say "cut it down", do you mean just chop off 30mb? Or do you mean "shrink" it down to 800mb?

womble mpeg vcr to cut parts of an mpeg file.
If you mean "shrink" it down to size, you'd better go back and reencode it at a lower bitrate. Or get hold of a 90 min CD-R. Always handy to have a couple of those around for those VCD projects that gets a little out of hand.

Well the original file was nto the bet quality and the approach I had in mind was to simply cut off 30MB (the crap 10 mins at the start lol), but I am open to suggestions if you can point me towards a utility that can shrink an already encoded mpeg

I think simply chopping off 30MB would be easiest due maintaining quality etc, allthough as I say I dont know if this is possible, hence the original question

If I have to re-encode at all then I may just go back to Tmpgenc and use a lower bitrate

Yeah I thouht the re-encode with lower bitrate would be the only way to get the whole file thats why I just want to cut it down lol

RE: womble, is it free and fully functional for this purpose?

The older TMPGenc 2.5 had mpeg tools that could do straight cuts/joins -- did they take that out of the current version of TMPGenc? (I haven't kept up with TMPGenc).

I could be wrong, but I'm led to believe that rejig can transcode MPEG files down.
    If in doubt, Google it.

My experience with TMPGEnc cut/join feature is "mixed" to put it mildly. But since you've encoded with TMPGEnc, you might be luckier.
I think womble mpeg vcr has a fully functional 30 day trial.
ReJig transcodes mpeg, but I'm not sure if it does m1v or just m2v. Neither do I know how VCD compliant a transcoded m1v would be, if it can be done...

  9. Cheers M'dears, just used womble, nice bit of kit that

Strangely though, the end file is only 600MB in size, I only chopped off 12 mins, not a complaint though I suppose

    Thanks guys

Yeah Tmpgenc popped up a message about 'how pissing around with the vcd bitrates may balls up the standard etc' but I unlocked them and pissed about with them anyway, dropping them down to 800, encoded the file, burnt it and then played it with no problems, that is all I need to know lol

Some claim that 1150 is max bitrate for VCD, even if I've never seen that in any specification of the standard.

That would expalin to newbs like me why the tmpgenc warning pops up by default then, as if to say 'are you sure you want to dick around with this' lol

Just for a laugh I dropped it down to 70 'just to see', tons of artifact and no audio, hey I was bored
