  1. Hi, I live in Tijuana (mexico), I went to the Sanborns store yesterday and bought the Bichos widescreen dvd (Bug's life), it was the regular version, 1 disc edition, it said on the cover "Wide Screen", but its not widescreen, it's fullscreen. Do u guys think I'm entitled to a refund? I mean, it's like false advertisment right? And it wasn't cheap, it was like 26 bucks :S.
    Thanks

    Hi mirwais,

I'd say take it back - I don't know if it goes as far as false advertising, it's probably more like a mistake.

But, I'd hope that any good retailer would exchange or refund it. I would imagine that an exchange for the correct product would be more likely.

I hope that helps, and that it's a bit more constructive the other replies you've received.

You got screwed. Before you take it back though, turn the disk over. The initial 1 disk release here was widescreen on one side, fullscreen on the other. It you don't have this, then yes, you are entitled to a refund.

Jdizzy40, there was recently a large lawsuit against MGM for false advertising and misreprentation regarding the pacjaging of their DVDs. As this site concerns itself to a large degree with DVDs, backing up DVDs etc., I believe this is a valid post. I recently picked up the MGM released of Gorky Park. It states quite clearly on the cover that this is a 1.85 release, however it has been cropped to fit a 1.78 screen. This is in response to the luddite american fullscreen lobby, who believe that black bars mean they are getting less picture, and likely to get worse before it gets better.

How many DVDs actually use that, though? With all my DVDs, the only one I have noticed that does that is Twins Effect Hong Kong DVD.

  9. Ok, I exchanged it. Gave me the money back.
It said on the front cover "Widescreen" and it was a one side dvd. Thanks for your replies (not the "funny" ones ) hehe.

  12. Some short movies have Wide Screen and Full Screen on the same side. You have to pick it in the menu set up. Some DVD you have to flip it over to get Wide Screen or Full Screen.

I have never seen one where it was wide screen or full screen on the same side of the disc.

There are tons of DVDs like that zzyzzx. These days it is much more common than DVD10's with WS on one side and FS on the other.

This is fairly common where the cover art says widescreen, or DVD9 or 10, or something, and the disk is otherwise. Some vendors contract for, essentially their own DVD release. They get licensing rights for certain movies and have new ones pressed but they save money by only making them DVD5 with one version of the film (WS or FS), where the original release was DVD10 with FS on one side and WS on the other. But they still just use the original dvd cover art, presumabably to save money. It is blatant false advertising and very dishonest. Walmart does this all the time. There have been numerous complaints to the Better Business Bureau and there have been talks of a possible lawsuit. I'd definitely like to join, this happened to me when I bought Johnny Nmuemonic.
