  1. Hi, I'm just about to upgrade my writer from an Optorite dd201 to an NEC 3520A.
When I was burning discs on the Optorite 201, I had to burn at the slowest
speed in order for the discs to play on my bedroom DVD player. I was wondering if I'll have to do the same with the new player and therefore not be able to take advantage of the 16 write speed, or is it just down to the media, regardless of the drive? The media I use is Ridata G04.
    Thanks.

It can be a combination of both. You don't state that if you burn at a higher speed if that disc is able to play on other machines, or if you have even tried another brand of media, so it's difficult to say for sure.

@ deezer One good way is to try and find out
I picked up a NEC 3520A about a month ago and love it!!
You can also update the firmware to auto bitset dvd+r to dvd-rom.
You will be happy with it

Some media will burn like crap with one brand/model burner & burn great with another brand/model burner & vice versa....

  4. I'd say it's more likely to be your burner/FW. Some people have had problems with G04, but overall it's still pretty good media. The G04 I've used burns great, even at 8x. The NEC 3520 would be my first suggestion for a replacement.

  5. Thanks guys for all the inputs. I got the NEC 3520 on your advice and so far everything seems to be playing great. I guess the burner does make a difference. Thanks again.

There seem to be two camps. A pro Ritek, and an anti Ritek camp.
Sorry but I have to stick with the anti Ritek, and got to agree with "cap". Crap media ! You've splashed out on a new dvd burner, so splash out a little extra and get decent media.
Ritek/Ridata etc seem to work for some people (steve, noah), but seriously crap out for most others (including myself). Get media that works perfectly for everyone all of the time.
For Christs sake, there's an interveiw posted on this website by the salemanager of Ritek admitting that their media has been crap.

Well, i'm not really Pro "Ritek", just stating what my experiance was using them because at the time i wanted to try 2 diff. hub printables and they were one and the other was the Prodisc +R, (bought 100 of each about 1 1/2 months ago) I actually use the Prodisc +R because i like to change the booktype to dvd-rom

And they both burned great with the NEC 3520A

    Gotta love it 8)

& deezer did state that they were working well for him in his new burner

And i rarely go over 8X, did acouple of 16X just to see and they scanned just as well as the 8X burns but i still prefer to burn at 8X

    Hi,
The ritek discs are perfect for me. Anyways, you shouldn't burn the discs at such high speeds because than it doesn't always turn out right because it doesn't burn efficiently. Just burn at slower speeds unless you have really good media that is trustable like Ritek (Ridata).. i still don't use my Drives 16 x speed.. burn my discs at 2 x lol.. usually takes 30 mins for a DVD-R.

ok, if you insist...

I don't dislike Riteks. I dispise them. I have burned on G04's, I have burned on G05's, I have burned on Maxells with G04 ID, I have burned Prodata G04, Ridisc, Ridata, Ri everything, and half of them have crapped up. I got swept on the wave of "Ritek is beautiful" from the forums a year ago and dived in headfirst. Then most people started saying there are problems with Ritek. Some of the first lots may have turned out ok, but then I learned my lesson. Most of the Riteks I thought were ok, pixelate half way through. If I loan one of my Riteks to a friend, half the time they come back and say "I couln't see it to the end", and I feel stupid. When I have time I have to check them all. .
The last Riteks haven't just become bad, they have become bloody atrocious.
Why don't the good medias crap up, why don't TY's, why don't all good Japanese brands ?
I don't enjoy wasting my time and money

My question is related, but not exactly dealing with the subject. My burner is a Lite-On SOHW-832S and I've been burning Maxell DVD-RPW DVD's at 8x with these specs:

    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:MXL RG03]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc Type : [DVD-R]
    Manufacturer ID : [MXL RG03]
Disc Application Code : [Unrestricted Use : Consumer Purpose]
    Recording Speeds : [1x - 2x - 4x]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3 MB = 4.38 GB]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The discs are marketed for 8x, but DVD Identifier only lists them for 4x max. I've been getting so-so quality when burning at 8x and I'm wondering if its because of the discs. My question is would there be a major quality improvement if I dropped the burning speed to 6x? Also, why would Maxell list the discs at 8x if they only show to be compatible up to 4x?

  11. compuball, that's a burner issue, not a media issue. Upgrade your firmware for your burner. (or buy a good burner like an NEC)

I have the drive updated to the latest stock firmware...

  13. Then find a decent modified FW or write strategy for those discs over at CDfreaks. If that doesn't resolve your problem, get a good burner. Most Liteon DVD burners are average at best.

I've had these burners (I'm burning with 2 simultaneously) for some time now and I was looking to replace them. I've been hearing good things about the NEC drives. Are there any other brands that I should be looking into?

Pioneer is known to give good quality burns. I have owned a 106 and a 108 and they have both worked flawlessly.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!
