  1. Hi

I was just wondering if there is a easy way to convert a .AVI file to VCD or SVCD so I can play it on a normal DVD player. I have tried the program, AVI2DVD and selected my output as VCD but it made the file more than 2GB. Is it not possable to convert AVI to VCD and have the file still be about 700MB?

Any help would be much appreciated.

  2. Which encoder you are using with AVI2DVD?
About the 700 MB - if your movie is 70 min long standart VCD is 700 MB
    80 min - 800 MB
    90 min -900 MB
    and so on.

  3. I am using QuEnc as the Decoder.
The file I am trying to convert is 700MB and about 60 or 70 minutes long but converts to over 2GB.

What are the specifics in terms of the encoding properties (i.e. standard VCD template for video and audio???)?

Keep in mind that if you create a VCD using standard VCD bitrates, then you will be able to fit 80-minutes onto an 80-min CD-R. The 80-min VCD will be ~800mb (as Abond mentioned), and it will burn ok to a 700mb CD-R -- as long as your authoring package is burning it as a VCD.

  5. Sorry to mention this but QuEnc is not good for encoding mpeg1. As it is based on ffmpeg mpeg1 encoding is not fixed and CBR encoding also. You can aim for SVCD and encode nicely mpeg2 with QuEnc, but mpeg 1 is not recomended. Well, to see what I mean load the encoded file in the last version of GSpot and look for the video properties - I bet it is far away from what VCD is (if you don't know what is VCD (no offence) look here left top WHAT IS: VCD)
The same concern is valid for FreeEnc and NuEnc.
Best what you can do is to encode directly with TMPGEnc (free for VCD) the avi to VCD using appropriate template.

It seems you do not know how long is the file - it is strange. Did you play it? Between 60 and 70 min there is significant difference - whole 10 min.

  7. Sorry Abond, I dont have the file with me. It is just a normal movie that has been broken into 2 AVI file so I guessed it should be about 60 to 70 minutes. I can go and have a look at home tonight and see.

I will try everything you posted so far and see what happens. I guess I will just have to play around with it and see what happens. Will let you know. Thanks for all the help so far.

    2 apps:

    TMPGEnc (any v)
    VCDEasy (v 1.52)

for VCD(MPEG1), they're both free. Give you great quality, great control.

  9. I would suggest TMPGEnc to encode your AVI to VCD/SVCD compliant MPEG. Select the correct template. It will take care of all the settings.

However you need to know that if you have AC3 audio in AVI then TMPGenc will not read it. If audio is VBR MP3 then also TMPGEnc will act funny. Use Gspot or AVICodec to see whats there in your AVI file. FOe plain and simple burning use Nero
