  1. Is there a way to "reboot" my cable modem without physically walking downstairs, unplugging it then plugging back in? Is there a command I can run from my computer to restart it?

    Thanks

Depends on the brand. You should be able to Telnet to it by IP address, but it is likely it will present you with a password field. More often than not, the password is the serial number on the bottom of the modem.

Never found a way to software reboot mine. I just unplug the PS to it and wait a few minutes. If you have to reboot very often, then you have a bigger problem.

glockjs has the right idea. You could use a X10 module and remotely disconnect the AC to the modem then reconnect. But really, why do you need to do it that often?

Just run an extension cable up the stairs and plug the power into a receptacle close to you

  11. I don't know how your service works but mine though dynamic does not reset the IP when you reset the modem. Regardless of extended power downs on the modem it's had the same IP for months. I think I've seen an IP change about 7 times in the two years I've had cable.

That totally defeats the purpose of dynamic ip's. They are supposed to go back into a pool to be redistributed when not in use.

It couldn't be considered dynamic then, could it?

I think maybe you are a bit confused... or have a static IP.

  14. Well it's suppose to be dynamic according to Adelphia and it does change from time to time, but not each time you reset the modem. I have no idea how they work it.

Me either, because if you reset the modem, you are supposed to grab a different number. How long did you power down the modem before?

  16. I had a power outage not too long ago. It was down for over 3 hours and still I had the same IP when it came back up. But Adelphia swears its dynamic. They charge you extra for a static IP.
