Box office smash Titanic might have got people flocking to the cinema, but its theme tune, Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On got them running for the nearest exit.

BBC News Online's Talking Point asked users what was the most annoying song they'd ever heard. 1,000 emails came flooding in.

Celine Dion came in for the most stick. Some reactions to the Canadian songstress were fairly extreme.

    Rubbish lyrics

"I have to say that any or all of Celine Dion's 'music' does make me want to drill my own eardrums!" ranted Pete, UK.

Simon in England wrote: "The worst ever 'song', without a doubt, has to be the version of Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On that I heard on someone's mobile phone the other day. Please let it be a one-off."

And Stephen Mahon, emailing in from Ireland just plain despaired: "Does anyone really live their life according to the rubbish lyrics which are contained in this song?"

    One hit wonder

But it isn't just Ms Dion's musical efforts that provoke rage in our users, it would seem that the country and western genre also gets people's backs up.

Billy Ray-Cyrus's line dancing hit Achy Breaky Heart makes Sara in England want to "stick hot pokers" in her ears, and Dolly Parton's toe-tapping Jolene winds Paul Taranson up so much it makes him "SCREAAAAAM - I know - I'll saw my head off" he decides.

Other musical no-no's include Cliff Richard's Millennium Prayer, Mr Blobby's attempt at a chart topper, Black Lace's memorable Agadoo and classic 80s romantic coupling Rene and Renata for their one hit wonder Save Your Love.

But the most extreme reaction came from Martin in England to M People's car advert theme Search For The Hero - "Makes me wanna put my head in the blender." We wouldn't recommend that Martin, it would probably be safer just to turn your radio off.

It didn't even have any lyrics but the Birdie Song - the maddening tune which prompted displays of appalling dancing throughout the 1980s, has been voted the most annoying song of all time.

The irritating classic by The Tweets, which went to number two in 1981, fought off stiff competition from the Teletubbies and Aqua to claim the top spot.

The poll, commissioned for internet site dotmusic, was bad news for Kylie Minogue whose timeless I Should Be So Lucky finished fifth.

The singer, who went on to find more pop credibility and recently scored a number one with Spinnin' Around, was one of only two acts included in the top ten whose songs were not novelty hits.

Chris De Burgh was the other with his chart-topper Lady In Red.

Music fans might find them annoying but they still bought them - seven of the top 10 made it to number one, two were number two hits and one went to number three.

Andy Strickland, dotmusic editor, said: "Every year the Ibiza season produces at least one song that is as irritating as it is catchy.

"While we wait for this year's answer to the Macarena or the Vengaboys, it isworth reflecting on some atrocities of the past. The Tweets are worthy winners of most irritating record."

While few would argue, everyone will have their own thoughts on songs which maybe should have made it to the list.

Where for instance was Rene and Renata's Save Your Love or Spitting Image's horrendously catchy Chicken Song and who can forget Gazza's rendition of Fog on the Tyne?

Aiiieeee! My ex's favorite song. She played it so often I thought the speakers would melt. Thank God she finally got tired of it.

    3. Barbie Girl - Aqua

Actually, I liked that song. At least, it was a step up from "Don't Pay The Ferryman."

But, I'd like to know how old the editor was who compiled that list. Young editors who post "all time..." this and that lists often neglect to mention songs "before their time" ... like:

    1) Macarthur Park - Richard Harris
    2) Yummy Yummy Yummy - Tommy Roe
    3) any song "sung" by William Shatner

You should have saved the Barbies, they are worth a lot today.

  13. Not really a scientific poll, since it wasn't a random sampliing. Remeber, if the song is popular, it cannot be the worst song by default.

Victoria? Don't know that one. Also LOVE TO HATE Britney, Christina, Shakira, Ashley Simpson, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, New Kids On the Block, 98 Degrees, N'Sync, Backside Boys... all of 'em. Sad that they've made more $$$ than I'll probably make in a lifetime.

    Hello,

I hate the ads in the midwest for SBC. They keep playing Eric Clapton's LAYLA during the commercials. I like the song but I can't stand to listen it to it after hearing it over and over again.....

Is this a typo or sarcasm ?

"******* talentless media whore, who'd sell her own unborn foetus if it got her another MTV appearance" is a more apt description.

"Layla"? I thought that was "Wonderful Tonight" on that commercial. Maybe a different commercial though.

  30. And yet another topic that I could on and on for hours upon. There are sooo many shitty songs that made it big and will continue. Its unbelivable the crap that makes it onto the radio. I happen to like many different genres of music, most as a matter of fact. I would have to say my favorite is hard rock (metallica, ozzy, etc, etc), but I have no aversions to classic rock (from my dad listening to it all the time), country (from my mom), hip hop/r&b/dance/rap (from being inundated to it for the last 15 years), classical/blues/jazz (just because it rocks), etc, etc.

Here are a few songs that just grate on my nerves:

Ugly Kid Joe - Hate Everything About You has got to be my all time worst favorite song to hate.

Stairway to Heaven - I have heard this song umpteen times and it just annoys me. But yet, everytime it comes on the radio, I HAVE to listen to it. Strange. Its like crack ... you know its not good for you, but its still addictive lol

Almost anything from these new So-Cal punk bands. They are just so cookie cutter and blah. There is no way to differenciate between them. They all sound exactly the same.

I got a few more but this is good for now
