You don't format DVD-R or DVD+R. You need to erase DVD_RW and DVD+RW.

If you downloaded a Divx movie and burnt it to CD-R then it will not play unless your friends player can play Divx movies.

I think you need to start reading some of the guides in the How To section (found on your left). Especially in the AVI to DVD area.
    Read my blog here.

  6. Convert (encode) your avi to mpeg-2, then author and burn.
Start with the Guides section, look for "AVI to DVD".

Please stop typing in CAPS which means you're SHOUTING. It is rude to type with your CAPS LOCKED. The guides section on HOW TO CONVERT is over to your left<<<<<<<<<<<<<. Do a search or read the guides before posting questions.

  10. first off, you need to find out exactly what kind of file you are starting with. find out what kind of file it is you downloaded. then you need to realize that if you want to make that file into a dvd (-r or +r doesn't really matter) that it has to be in the correct format. for dvd you need to convert whatever type of file you downloaded into an MPEG-2 file. then you need to use a dvd authoring program like dvd-lab or tmpgenc dvd author which will put your MPEG-2 file into the correct format to burn onto the dvd. ANY dvd you look at will consist of VOB files. these are what your dvd player reads. they are really just MPEG-2 files with the names changed to be read by a standalone dvd player. go the guides section and look how to convert whatever file type you have now to a dvd5, which is a normal recordable dvd. there will be many guides there telling you step by step how to do this.

now we've given you just about all the information we can without actually making your dvd for you. use the guides section of this site. that's what the guides are there for. i learned everything i know from this site and i started from scratch. you can do the same. it just takes time.

  11. Most home DVD player plays VCD (VCD and SVCD) and DVD (DVD-r or DVD+r). Some older DVD players will not play SVCD or DVD+r. Only special players will play DIVx.
I think most downloaded movies are in DIVX format ( not sure if I am right).
DVD-r and DVD+r are determined by the media that you bought. You cannot format it. Most newer DVD writers can write DVD+r or DVD-r. However there are still DVD writers out there that only support one or the other.
I have two DVD players and one does not play DVD+r. So I always burn my DVD on DVD-r disks.
If your download movie is in DIVx format, you can use vsoDivxToDVD to convert it to DVD fomat before you burn it to a DVD disk.

I agree with the first post. Do some reading and quite asking for your hand to be held at each step. Determine first what your source file is. Then decide what you want to do with it, convert to MPEG? This is not a click the pretty button hobby. No one step solutions here.
