Hi
I would like to know which DVD-R media that gives the best compatibility for DVD recorders and players.
Thanks.

First, I advise you to spend some time searching and reading this forum. Your question has no easy answer. Time and effort will be required to find a solution fit for your needs.
That said, a good start would be Maxell (made in Japan), Taiyo Yuden (made in Japan), TDK (Made in Japan).
Many people here to favor -R media. DVD+R media can also be very good, provided that you bitset it to DVD-ROM at the time the disc is recorded. Bitsetting is only possible if the recorder (hardware) supports it (I am not aware of any set-top recorders that support bitsetting).
You might consider ordering a "sample pack" from an online store, to test playback. I know www.rima.com sells sample packs.
***Do Not buy in quantity until you find something that satisfies your needs. Also be aware that many retail brand names do not manufacture their own media. Memorex is a reseller, they do not make media! (avoid memorex like the plague!)***Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
Thanks.
So far.. having been burning several coasters (not exactly coaster i.e. can only play on the DVD recorder and not DVD player).
Guess will keep trying until I hit the right one. -

And steve2713 has a good point about finalizing your discs?
I forget people do forget to do that sometimes... -
Thanks steve2713 & Hoahtuck.

okay, the toshiba is the standalone i'm assuming, what is the recorder and have you tried playing the disc's on any other standalone player ?
Because -R should be pretty universal on standalone players, only seen a few real old models that would not play -R.
I have a panny standalone recorder and they have played straight from my recorder to 3 diff. brands of standalone dvd players i have... -
Toshiba standalone DVD players are VERY picky about recorded DVD media, especially their older models. Many Sony and Toshiba DVD players simply refuse to play anything that is recorded media, except possibly for DVD-ROM bitset +R media.

Can someone briefly explain the whole Taiwan vs. Japanese discs for me? I have burned at least 30 memorex discs made in Taiwan with no coasters at all. In fact, I've never experience coasters or messed up media ever, am I just lucky? I use Memorex, Maxell, TDK, Sony, and ESA, all made in Taiwan. Are these all these discs made by the same ppl, then rebranded?

Discs are made by all different sorts of manufacturers, you can get information on who produced them by checking the 'media code' of the disc. You can check this with DVDInfo (free). Generally speaking, made in Japan media is of very high quality, with the most well known man. being Taiyo Yuden. I've had great luck with almost all made in Taiwan media as well, although the quality tends not to be as good as made in Japan media.
Look under the media guide on the left menu for specifics to different types of media, who makes them, what's worked and hasn't worked for who... -
Well, I've found that FujiFilm 8x -R has not let me down once yet. I usually buy the 50 pack spindles from BestBuy and these are made in Taiwan but I haven't had one coaster yet using either my NEC 3500 on the PC or my Pioneer 220 recorder. All the discs have played in a standalone Sony (which is VERY picky), a standalone Samsung 5-disc player, a Panasonic standalone, and a Cyberhome portable DVD player.
BestBuy constantly has good sales on their Fujis. I just bought a 100 pack for $39.99. -
The "Made in Japan" Fuji's are Taiyo Yuden while the Taiwanese usually end up being Ritek or Prodisc.
