I'm planning to convert som family movies to MPEG-4 in order to put them on gold CDRs, but am really confused about which MPEG-4 codec is best suited for long time storage. H264? Xvid? other?
Help me out here, guys...Thanks!

Hello,
Storage??? I think you may just want to use good quality blanks if your using for archiving. You'll ALWAYS be able to get any codec that's been out there. That's what the NET is for.
But stick with the big guys - divx or xvid and you'll never have to worry about it.
OR convert it to mpg2 and burn it to dvd then you'll ALWAYS be able to use it
Kevin
(besides just burn a "codec" disc if your that worried about it - save the current codecs your using and burn them to one disc)Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
*shrug*
If you're wondering what will run under Windows 2020... XVID or DIVX is pretty much the safe bet for now. But really DVD is long term. Burn to DVD and you're safe, the consumer has spoken. -
Thanks guys... I already have them as DV AVI at the highest data rate, but I saw in the news that The Danish Film Institute uses MAM-A Gold CDRs for long time storage (gold dvds don't exist yet). So just in case I'm going for the gold CDRs.

Hmm, ah, well, you can cut the video in 700 MB chunks and save as data on gold (are they really golden CD's
?) CD.

a lot of you kids might not remember when all cd-r's were golden.. back in the good old days. i havent seen a golden cd-r in ages.. i've got a couple though.. still work great.. but these new "thin slimey green/blue" cd-r's are way cheaper to manufacture.

They are not golden, but they have a gold layer or something...I remember the Kodak one, they were fab.
