    Hi,

I've just purchased one of these recorders. It can read DVD+R, DVD+RW and CD-audio OK, but I can't get it to read any DVD video disks - getting a "No Disc" error every time one is inserted.

Can anyone advise whether I am missing something obvious or what the problem may be.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Did you buy it used? That model has been discontinued for quite a while now.
If so....that is why the person sold it in the first place I imagine.

  3. A common problem with that generation of Philips DVD recorders is that after about 1 year or 400-600 burns, the laser assembly starts failing. The symptoms are that it will give NO DISK on DVD+R media, yet will still work on DVD+RW media. My Philips DVDR75 has this problem.

Many thanks. With mine its just DVD-Video that's not working, but I guess its the same problem. Is it an expensive i.e. cost-effective repair?

    Regards,

    Paul

I have the MONSTER firmware upgrade that solved an error code problem on my Philips 985 that came out in June 2004.
It's the 139MB version that supposedly updates ALL Philips models.

    What problems did it fix.
My DVDR75 has gotten to the point that isn't liking RICOHJPN +R and +RW discs and is even not liking some of the CMC media that Philips sells under thier own name.
Right now it will burn MIJ Fujifilm and Maxell and still has no problem playing the CMC +R media but is having problems with the several 100 RICOHJPN R01 that I've burned in over the past year.
Some of the +RWs will burn OK the 1st time used and give disc err the second time used.

It cured my ABxxxxx error message that showed up all of a sudden. It wasn't linked to media and it wasn't linked to any recording related events. That is the only reason I even tried the firmware update. If the problems occur after or during recording...that...99% of the time.... will require a trip to the repair shop or the dumpster if it is out of warranty.

I'll try to find the old link to the firmware update but doubt I will have any luck. This firmware update was only available for a week or so them it was broken up into smaller - model specific updates....I guess because of it's size and download time.
If not I still have the disc I used in my 985 right here in my software box.

    Philips Firmware Revision History

    Philips Firmware Downloads

The above web site was bought out by someone else but most of it is still functional. It mainly deals with older Philips Recorders. The HUGE firmware upgarde that I have is no longer listed.
