    Howdy,

I've started recording shows with SageTV and want to be able to put them on DVD. But SVCDs nly take up 700 megs so can I encode in MPEG2 that is 3gigs for an hour and shrink that down to 700 megs (while keeping the quality)?

That would let me get 5 or 6 (or more if I take out commercials) shows on one DVD...

What would be the best program to use to do this so I can go find a tutorial on how it works?

    Thanks.

  2. Just change your capture settings in Sage.
You can then directly author the SVCD mpeg-2's to dvd with DVDLab.
    Guide in my sig below.

Make dvd instead. Use low resolutions similiar to svcd, 352x480/576 and make compliant dvds instead of "dvdsvcds".

If I want to do things like editing out commercials and stuff like that, can I do that withing DVDLab or is it better to do that with a separate program and then import the trimmed and ready to go mpg into the burner software?

  5. Edit separately.
Baldrick is correct. Capture at halfD1 instead of SVCD. Filesizes will be about the same, but the files will be totally DVD compliant.

Any idea what setting in SageTV would be the best for this? THey don't give much info on the specific settings.... and assuming 352x480 is the resolution that wasn't lsited from what I saw. And what's the 576 for?

  7. I used Sage for about an hour before deleting it. I wasn't happy with ANY of it's interface, nor how you have to create your own settings, because the defaults are read only.
Edit one of the templates, and see if you can get what you want. Just keep clicking on the setup and options buttons until you find it buried about 15 screens deep.

576 would be the PAL vertical resolution, you don't want this, unless you are in Europe or Australia.
