Divx as data on DVDR ?

Hi, I am planning on buying DVD Writer but before I do I want to clear some questions in my mind...

I know the my DVD player plays DVD+-R media but finalized DVD's with menus etc.

My question is if I can write 4 gig worth of movies on the DVDR as data, would the DVD player recognize it ?


Or Can I fit 4 - 5 (700m) divx movies on one DVD and not lose quality ?

Some DivX players don't play them from DVD (probably assuming everything on DVD media is DVD Video). I guess those players also wont play MP3 from DVD.

I was looking at the guides ...

The question is this.. a DVD can hold average 120 mins of video (in mpeg2)

When I convert the Divx to mpeg2 do I still take 120 mins of space or does the conversion reduce the file size and I write on 30 min portion of the DVD ?

I hope you follow ...

Again can I fit 4 or 5 full length divx moveis on one DVD or does it depend on the time ?

1 divx is 90 mins long so you can only fit 1 divx on a DVD ???

OK, we're talking AVI to DVD Video conversion!
Only time matters. AVI file size is 100% irrelevant. @ VCD quality settings, a single layer DVD can hold 6-7 hours worth of video, but that's probably not what you want. You probably want at least 4x as high bitrate, and full (or half) DVD resolution, so 1.5-2 hours of video is what you mostly go for (in reality any full length movie). Use the bitrate calculator to find what bitrate to use, to fit a movie of a certain length on a DVD.

OK .. so it is just like VCD's.

with VCD's there is a constant bitrate that you need to incode in but with DVD's I guess you have range... which is ok

but what about movies writtten on the DVD as data. plain old files...

So I copy my 5 divx movies on to a DVD-R and stick the dic in my DVD player...

Million dollar question : Is the DVD gonna play the movies ?

Yes, just like VCD, but you have up to ~9000 kbps to play with, and audio in many flavors and bitrates.

As for DivX on DVD: Try it. May or may not work, depending on how the player is designed. (Hint: Use DVD-RW/+RW for your tests!)

Hmmm...This does explain what movies are in the divx format, but, I think when it comes to using plastic for these purposes its recommended on this forum by some to use plastic sheep.

Otherwise, it looks like your stuck between two options:

- Reencode your divx vidoes to mpeg2 at DVD specs and author a DVD
or
- Buy a DVD Player that can see the divx on DVDR and not just CDR.

i have the phillips 642 and i put several divx or xvid's,"3 - 6" on a dvd+r and it will play them without any problems.

If the DivX data CDs play in your player, there is no reason that DivX data DVDs will not.

My Phlilips 642 has no problem playing DivX/XviD data DVDs and Sonic MYDVD has no problem making them.

The only risk is the cost of one blank DVD-R and the 20 minutes it takes to get the files on the DVD.

I'm tempted to see if my Philips 642 will play WMV9 from DVD. I already know it will play both DivX and XviD.

Risk - that your player can't play AVI on DVD -not the cost of the trial media. I'd be pretty disappointed if mine didn't (when I buy one...)

I just saw your earlier post where you recommended to try it.

I also like your idea of using DVD-RW to test with. I need to go buy a few myself. No need to waste a 4.7GB DVD-R just to see if a small test file will play on your player.

Then I would suggest buying a Liteon burner which will burn AVIs onto a DVD-R and a Philips 642 DVD player which will play them. At least they work for me.

Any working DVD writer can write AVI (and other data) to writable DVD media. It somehow actually defines what a DVD writer is....

That is what I suspected which is why I said that the only risk would be the cost of the DVD media. We already know that the files will play on his player.

You're right! But what make/model? Again, that it plays AVI from CD is no guarantee for that it will play from DVD

I guess that there is no gaurantee that a DivX player will play DivX from a DVD disk but I would be disappointed if I bought one and it didn't.

I'm just happy to know that my Philips 642 will play them.

I am very disappointed that my Liteon 812S refuses to erase a DVD-RW disk, no matter what burning program I try to erase with though.

$150 is alot to pay for a burner that is supposed to be able to rewrite a rewritable media and won't.
