it plays on windows media player no problem as i have installed the codecs but for some reason cant convert here is the info from avicodec and hopefully someone can advise what im doing wrong

ive installed ffdshow and that just made it play in media player etc but still wont convert - i havent tried xvid codec yet tho - ill give that a try now and let you know what happens - thanks

well i tried xvid codec and the encoder programme i used was alive video converter, it started to encode then just froze at 60% - i have tried some others and one stated there was no video file?? tmpgenc opened it but said the file was far too big for disk?? when its only 700mb - is there something wrong with this file? should i give up now??
help would be muchos appreciated.

As your audio regarding the report from avicodec is 126 Kbps (128 is the standart) I assume your audio is VBR. Load the file in VDub, select direct stream copy for video, disable the audio (No Audio) and Save as - give name save as avi. You will have an avi without sound. Load this avi in tmpg and encode. TMPG and most other mpeg encoders don't like VBR audio files.Originally Posted by floster

VLC is one of the most robust players, and is designed to play back partial files and multi-part download files that others choke on. Because of this it is invaluable for playing back difficult files, but can hide the fact that a file is too corrupt for other programs to work with. In your case, I would say that you definately have cprruption at around the 50 minute mark.
I would scan it with DivFix to see what state it is in.Read my blog here.
