  1. I have tried to convert an xvid file to dvd but i am having real problems - i have tried using several programmes to convert eg alive video converter & winavi video converter and lots more but each cant open the file.

    it plays on windows media player no problem as i have installed the codecs but for some reason cant convert here is the info from avicodec and hopefully someone can advise what im doing wrong

    File : 700 MB (700 MB), duration: 1:36:14, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 52 %
    Video : 613 MB, 891 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 624*256 (2.43:1), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported
    Audio : 86 MB, 126 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

    I would love some help here

    have you tried installed koepies xvid codec? no codec packs or ffdshow.

  3. ive installed ffdshow and that just made it play in media player etc but still wont convert - i havent tried xvid codec yet tho - ill give that a try now and let you know what happens - thanks

  4. well i tried xvid codec and the encoder programme i used was alive video converter, it started to encode then just froze at 60% - i have tried some others and one stated there was no video file?? tmpgenc opened it but said the file was far too big for disk?? when its only 700mb - is there something wrong with this file? should i give up now??

    help would be muchos appreciated.

    As your audio regarding the report from avicodec is 126 Kbps (128 is the standart) I assume your audio is VBR. Load the file in VDub, select direct stream copy for video, disable the audio (No Audio) and Save as - give name save as avi. You will have an avi without sound. Load this avi in tmpg and encode. TMPG and most other mpeg encoders don't like VBR audio files.

  8. well the encoding completed but only 50 mins of the file? when i play it in VLC and media player it plays the whole file? so im guessing the file is corrupted in some way???

    VLC is one of the most robust players, and is designed to play back partial files and multi-part download files that others choke on. Because of this it is invaluable for playing back difficult files, but can hide the fact that a file is too corrupt for other programs to work with. In your case, I would say that you definately have cprruption at around the 50 minute mark.

    I would scan it with DivFix to see what state it is in.
