  1. Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has tried this?
I use my Sony TRV33 miniDV camera as a passthru to my laptop via firewire and it is able to record protected VHS tapes right to the harddrive using WinDV, and once they are there, I tell WinDV to send back to my camera, which is hooked up to my Pioneer DVR-220s via S-Video, and it records perfectly, no "Copy Protection" errors.

Anyone else have any luck doing this?

Why do you go from VHS (via camcorder) to laptop and then from laptop to DVD recorder? Why not simply eliminate the middleman and go directly from VHS (via camcorder) to DVD recorder?

I do something similar. I'm converting my Disney and Other VHS tapes to DVD. I go from VCR ==> RCA ==> Sony TRV320 (digial passthrough) ==> Firewire ==> AVI capture. Works like a charm.

My Panasonic DV cam says explicitly that it can't be used to copy macrovision protected tapes, so I've never bothered. Now that I have a TBC, it doesn't really matter.

Neither will my Sony TRV320. If I try to use it to copy a macrovision tape I get copy inhibited message. However, if I take the tape out of the TRV320 I can use the digital passthrough of my DV camera to capture the tape, with the microvision removed, on my PC.

  7. Works exactly like that with my Sony TRV33. Does anyone have a DVD recorder with Firewire in to see if this process works the same?
