  1. I have a fairly new Sony DRU10A with the latest 1.0F firmware flashed on it. I have only gotten this thing to burn a couple of DVDs since I installed it.

    Alcohol 120% dies out with:

    21:10:11 Recording - DVD DAO - 4.0X (5520 KB/Sec)
    21:10:21 (G SONY DVD RW DRU-510A(1:1) - [Write ERROR] LBA: 2992, Length: 16
    S:KEY - 04/08/03 - "Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (Ultra-DMA/32)"
21:10:21 (G SONY DVD RW DRU-510A(1:1): Recording failed!
21:10:21 Error message: [04/08/03] - Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (Ultra-DMA/32)
21:10:21 (G SONY DVD RW DRU-510A(1:1): Recording failed!
    21:10:21 Image file loading aborted!

Nero crashes with a similiar error, some sort of unexplained Communication Error. Ulead DVD MovieStudio and DVDLab both die out wiht less informative errors, basically at 1-2%.

I have reinstalled XP Pro, swapped the burner to Master or Slave on my Secondary IDE port, and pretty much tried everything I can think of to get this stupid thing working. I've changed media brands and even tried DVD+RW to save on coaster costs. It's frustrating because the damn thing has burnt a few DVD's successfully (but nothing recently).

I've tried direct to disk, tried all those different tricks with Nero, and have burnt ISO images of the DVD and then tried burning that image w/Alcohol. All of them fail with that communication failure. The DVD plays DVD-roms fine, and I am pretty sure I can get it to record regular CD-Rs without a problem.

System is a 2.6ghz P4 w/a gig of ram. Primary IDE has my hard drives, secondary IDE has my 52x CD-R burner and this DVD burner, currently setup as a slave.

    Any ideas?

  2. Hmm, after I wrote that, I managed to burn a DVDRW by putting the DVD burner into PIO mode in the Device Manager. I noticed that the burning speed from Alcohol said "2.2x" instead of "4.0x" that it used to. 3.5gigs took about 20 minutes. I will try burning a few more DVDs tonight and hopefully not have any coasters.

Does this solution sound like it'll raise any red flags?

  3. Hi decker12,

I'm having the same problem (I have the Pioneer A09 DVD-RW).

How do you change to PIO mode in device manager? I tried to find that option but couldn't?

    I have XP, Nero6.3, P4 2.4GHz, 512RAM.
